Spain and Portugal have seen real summer heat already this week. As high pressure settles over mainland Europe, the sunshine and hot air will lift temperatures for many resorts.
Much of mainland Europe is under an area of high pressure this week. Storm Floris battered the UK and has moved onto Scandinavia and the Baltic States with warnings of strong winds and large waves. Wet and windy weather will continue to brush northwest Scotland, affecting Iceland and Norway. There will be further clusters of thunderstorms, but much of Europe will see fine, sunny and warm weather, hot in the south.
For anyone heading to Budapest for Sziget 2025, the festival runs from today until Monday 11th, and the weather looks fine. The forecast is dry and sunny but also hotting up with temperatures of 35C for Budapest, maybe tempered a little on the island (of freedom) with night time temperatures of 19C. Sunday and Monday look a bit more breezy, but the forecast is great.
For Spain and Portugal, there is hot air from Africa across the Iberian Peninsula with plenty of sunshine. Temperatures will be widely in the 30s C with some areas reaching 40 to 42C by the weekend. They could reach 43 or 44C in a few spots early next week as the heatwave continues. By night, temperatures will not drop below 23 to 25°C in the central and southern peninsula, as well as along the Mediterranean coasts. This could be uncomfortable when trying to sleep.
The Canary Islands will be approaching heatwave conditions with temperatures heading to the high 30sC in bright sunshine. It will also be very warm by night.
For those heading off on holiday, there is a balance in summer; the lure of heat and sunshine, but not extreme heatwaves, which would make conditions unbearable. Ongoing heat can lead to water supply problems, drought and an increased risk of wildfire. Thunderstorms can bring the risk of flash flooding and uncertainty on an otherwise hot and sunny day. It is worth becoming familiar with the national meteorological service of the country you are visiting. Tourists visiting Scotland on Monday would have benefited from the UK Met Office’s warnings for Storm Floris. For those visiting Spain, there is AEMET, Portugal IPMA and Meteo France, all with their own websites, but familiar yellow, amber, and red warnings. Spain has seen red heat warnings this week with most of the European warnings are available on the MeteoAlarm website.
There is high heat for Sicily and Sardinia, whereas for northern Italy, there are thunderstorm warnings for the middle of the week but plenty of fine sunny and hot weather on the way. Temperatures in Switzerland will rise over the weekend.
In Greece, there is also high summer heat with yellow warnings for the Ionian Islands, including Corfu, Kefalonia and Zakynthos. Crete has temperatures climbing into the mid 30sC. You would expect this part of the world to be hot at this time of year and there will be plenty of sunshine.
Meteo France warnings of heatwave conditions begin
France will see the heat intensify this weekend with temperatures in the south climbing into the high 30s, perhaps even reaching 40C. Thursday sees a yellow heat warning pop up and the temperatures continue to climb. Toulouse, Montpellier around 39C by Sunday. Nice up to 33C this weekend on the Côte d’Azur. Bordeaux up to 38C but with a sweltering Sunday night coming up.
Paris is also hotting up, to 32C this weekend and even hotter for the start of next week as the surge of hot air from the south sets in and the sunshine just continues.
Scandinavia has experienced unusual heat this summer. There will be some warmth in the south, but not the worrying heat. Stockholm will be in the low 20sC with variable cloud, a few showers and bright spells this week. Copenhagen will also see a few showers on Friday, but the weekend looks dry at 21C.
The west coast of Norway looks more unsettled by the weekend as frontal rain arrives with temperatures around 15C for Bergen. Frontal bands are reaching northern parts of the UK on Saturday and these link across the North Sea to Norway. The large high pressure to the south will help the Low Countries and much of England see fine and warmer weather this weekend, reaching into the 30sC by early next week for London.
