High pressure giving way to frontal systems

High pressure brings fine, warm conditions to many areas midweek before frontal systems move in from the west, introducing some rain and cooler temperatures by Friday, after what's been an unusually dry March.

Issued: 26th March 2025 14:12

High pressure currently across England and Wales will slip southward through tomorrow, allowing fronts to move in from the west. Most places will have seen some rain by Friday in what has been a dry March so far. It will also be turning colder with temperatures closer to normal by Friday, after a pleasantly warm afternoon today and across much of England and Wales on Thursday.

Wednesday Night: Clear for England and Wales, Rain Further North

Southern Scotland should stay dry for much of the night but remaining parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland will see some rain, that should have cleared from the north by dawn allowing skies to break. A touch of frost is possible here in a few well-sheltered glens by morning, but for most of Scotland and Northern Ireland cloud will prevent the thermometer from falling below 4 to 7C in a fresh southwesterly wind.

For England and Wales it continues dry with clear spells. Light breezes will allow mist and patchy fog to form again and it may turn cold enough for a touch of grass frost in some rural areas as temperatures mostly fall to between 2 and 5C.

Thursday: Regional Contrast Develops

Thursday sees the fine weather continuing over much of England and Wales, once mist and patchy fog has cleared. There will be sunny spells again, but towards Cumbria and the Scottish border cloud may bring patchy rain later. After a chilly start it becomes pleasantly warm again, with top temperatures 14 to 17C but perhaps reaching 18 or 19C over sheltered parts of the east and south in a southwesterly breeze.

For Scotland and Northern Ireland it's a different story with fronts giving cloud and some rain, although mainly the north and east of Scotland may see clearer skies moving in for a time. Although temporarily decreasing, a southwest wind will be somewhat fresher here. It will also be colder here, with temperatures no higher than 9 to 11C in the north and 12 or 13C further south.

Thursday Night: Rain Spreads East

Although dry at first, all but probably East Anglia and the southeast will see some rain after dark as a cold front moves in from the west. This will be followed over Scotland, Northern Ireland and in the west by clearer skies, but with scattered showers. Here it will be turning noticeably colder as a fresh wind veers westerly, with the showers perhaps turning wintry in the Scottish mountains later. Lowest temperatures in the colder air will be 2 to 5C, but in milder southwesterlies 6 to 8C is more likely across the east and south.

End of the week

Friday sees the rain finally clearing from the east and south leaving the country in a colder regime, with a mixture of sunny spells and showers, wintry on Scottish hills.

The weekend remains unsettled with more rain moving in from the west on Saturday. But there should be enough time especially in central and eastern areas to witness a partial eclipse of the sun between about 10am and noon.

Also British Summer Time begins on Sunday so don't forget to put your clocks forward an hour in a day that remains unsettled, but it should be turning milder again with the weather probably beginning to improve in the south.
