Storm Eowyn has been named, and is set to affect the UK on Friday and into Saturday, bringing very strong winds.
Tuesday update, we have a named storm. Storm Éowyn (Ay-O-Win) has been named by the UK Met Office for Friday 24th. This will be the first named storm of 2025. There will be gales, high gusts, heavy rain and snow (mainly for northern hills) along with dangerous conditions along coastlines with large waves. Travel disruption is likely.
“Storm Éowyn is expected to bring very strong winds and widespread disruption on Friday” Met Office
A rapidly deepening low pressure will move in from the Atlantic on Thursday night bringing strengthening winds and heavy rain from the west after a more unsettled day. Although there is overall high confidence about this deep low, there is lower confidence about its exact track and so the strength of the winds in certain parts of the UK.
The early yellow wind warnings from Monday 20th have been updated and expanded in area on Tuesday 21st. This is because the centre of the low pressure has shifted a good way south on most of the major weather models rather than the searing glance that it was giving to NW UK yesterday. At the centre of the low, there will be very light winds, but it is usually the southern quadrant that sees the highest wind gusts and strong winds.
The updated warnings cover most of the UK although there is the highly populated area of SE Britain that isn’t covered by a yellow wind warning.
There is a high impact warning across Northern Ireland, southern Scotland, northern England and north and west Wales. A medium impact warning over northern areas and also southern parts.
High impacts from winds could include - Widespread danger to life from flying debris, widespread structural damage, long travel delays and significant disruption, widespread and prolonged disruption to power and Danger to life from large waves along coasts.
There is a separate yellow wind warning over Scotland for Saturday as the low pulls away towards Norway
“Storm Éowyn will continue to bring strong winds into Saturday, with some disruption possible”
