North to south weather split for the weekend

A look ahead to the weather this weekend: with high pressure putting in an appearance further south, it should turn drier here. But further north, there'll be more wind and rain to keep an eye out for.

Issued: 25th January 2024 16:23

With a ridge of high pressure edging up into southern England, the weekend will bring some drier weather for many. But with the high not heading too far north or west, there will be some more wet and windy weather to come for those further north.

If you're hoping for an early taste of Spring to go with that drier weather in the south, unfortunately, I can't really promise that. Saturday looks like being the sunnier day of the weekend, but with cooler air in situ, much of the country will peak at around 8-10c. Milder air will move up from the southwest by Sunday, but it's set to be quite moisture laden, so there's liable to be more cloud. That'll suppress temperatures, so for many, they're not going to be too dissimilar to Saturday, but should there be some breaks in the cloud, then the low teens are a distinct possibility.

Away from the drier, finer regions, Northern Scotland and Ireland are likeliest to see some showery rain during the day on Saturday. Other parts of Scotland, along with the far north of England, should be mostly dry, but don't rule out the odd, generally light shower. Later in the day, a more organised band of rain is likely to move up from the southwest into Ireland, Northern Ireland and by evening through into western Scotland. It'll then carry on its journey, mostly affecting central and northern Scotland, with those in southern Scotland missing out on the bulk, but probably not all of the rain.

Sunday will then see two things happening - that milder, cloudier air heads north into England and Wales, but at the same time, a quite lively front will move down from the northwest, bringing some heavy outbreaks of rain and gusty winds. The front may well have a crack at moving south through Scotland and into England and Wales during the day. How much success it's liable to have is a bit uncertain at this point, it may make some progress, perhaps as far south as central England and Wales before it begins to fizzle out, but there's a reasonable chance it'll stay a bit further north that before fading. Once it has cleared through, there'll be a cooler feel with sunny spells for Scotland and Northern Ireland, but there'll also be a scattering of showers, which'll turn wintry over the hills and mountains in Scotland.
