Glastonbury 2022 MudFest or SunFest Update1

A week to go until Glastonbury 2022 opens its doors. The weather looks fair but not as hot as this coming Friday. Don't go expecting that heat.

A week to go until Glastonbury 2022 begins after a two-year hiatus. It is, as always, sold out but there will be coverage on BBC radio and television. Over the coming week we will keep an eye on the forecast and update the cows Sunfest / Mudfest swing-o-meter.

The first thing to say about the Glastonbury forecast is that it doesn’t look as hot as the end of this week. Temperatures could reach 30C on Friday 17th. That does not look likely for the following week.

The average for June in the region is around 20C and it looks like those values would be expected by day. Still, any sunshine will be strong and warm, just not a sultry heat and feeling fresher after dark, or in a passing shower. The June overnight minimum average temperature is around 10C, which would feel quite cool with a breeze.

Average temps

For fine, dry settled weather with sunshine you’d be looking for high pressure over Somerset. There is a high out west which looks to be nosing in over SW Britain by the weekend. So potentially an improving story.

Looking at the pressure chart for the opening day Weds 22nd June, you can see the high pressure out in the Atlantic and a low pressure over Scandinavia. In-between the UK is in a brisk northerly flow. A cool, fresh air flow and looking rather blustery. There will be a scattering of showers as people travel, and make their way to Worthy Farm, on what could be a long day. By the evening, they should have faded and the cool breeze will be easing.

Recently the weather has been rather dry and the ground could be quite hard, for banging in those tent pegs. This weekend there is a lot of uncertainty about rain, even thundery downpours which could affect SW Britain. Even into Monday. All of that should have cleared before Wednesday too.

Thursday

The fresh flow from the northwest continues into Thursday with a small chance of a shower passing by but overall, a lot of fair, bright weather with warm sunny spells.

Then we are looking for the high pressure to do its work. If it does manage to build in from the west there is more chance of dry conditions, a bit more warmth and light winds throughout the weekend.

So, with 7 days to go we are opting for 70% sunfest. Stay tuned for frequent updates in the run up to Glastonbury - and don't forget you can also check the latest forecast for Pilton here
