Cloud gazing - Virga

Looking up and seeing strange vertical streaks hanging down from the clouds, that's Virga

Tricky one this for the cows as you can see. You can see rain in the sky but it's not wet at the ground. Some cows up, some cows sitting down. The streaks/lines in the sky are called Virga, from the Latin for rod. They are water droplets, or ice particles falling down from the clouds, but not reaching the ground. Looking across the showery landscape today, there was virga to be viewed everywhere. The precipitation evaporates before it hits the ground.
