Weather in transition as blocking high pressure starts to take hold

A period of transition lies ahead as Atlantic weather systems gradually give way to a blocking high pressure that will dominate Britain's weather pattern. By midweek, expect drier conditions, though frost and fog will feature as continental air moves in.

Blocking high pressure will become dominant, delivering mainly dry weather, particularly to central and eastern areas. However, until Wednesday, Atlantic systems will be trying to invade from the west, bringing some rain chiefly to the north and west. They will weaken as they progress, giving mostly dull, damp weather with little in the way of precipitation by the time the fronts reach the east.

It will be mostly mild before a new anticyclone intensifies over Britain on Wednesday. This will bring some sunshine, but frost and later patchy fog will also feature. Despite this, daytime temperatures should not be too far from normal, even a little above in the west, before colder continental air begins to move in next weekend.

On Sunday night, winds will freshen over Scotland, and after a brief lull across Northern Ireland, the north and west in particular will see further bursts of rain. Across England and Wales, those fronts will edge a little further eastward but will be weakening, with showery rain across the north-west, Wales and the south-west, mostly light and patchy. Here, it will stay relatively mild, but under clearer skies towards East Anglia and the south-east, expect another frost, with temperatures in the range of -1 to -3C by dawn.

It is much as you were into the new working week, with mostly just subtle changes. A decaying trough across England will probably bring more cloud to East Anglia and the south-east, after a cold and frosty start in places here. A southerly wind should also be more noticeable, especially in the north and west, where the Highlands and the Western Isles will see gales, with gusts in excess of 50 mph over some exposed coasts and hills.

Scotland and Northern Ireland will see further rain at times, as could Cumbria and the far west of England and Wales, but elsewhere, apart from the odd patch of light rain or drizzle, it will continue mainly dry. There will be some sunshine, mainly towards the east and south, and it may end up a little milder, with top temperatures in the range of 8 to 10C.

After dark, little changes, with the north and west tending to be more unsettled and breezier, but mild. Further east and south, it should continue mainly dry with variable amounts of cloud. However, it will be a little colder here, with a touch of frost possible once more in the east where skies clear for any length of time.

WYorksWeather I think a 2013 repeat is pretty much off the table. However, a mini beast not out of the question, but something similar to 2023 probably more realistic?

I think the answer to the original question is yes, but the next run of cold winters almost certainly won't be as cold as those of 2008-2013.

The 16 year cycle (1947, 1963, 1979, 1995, 2011) wasn't far off in 1995 because 1995/96 was a relatively cold...

Don I think a few weeks is pushing it for how far we can have confidence. But I think we can pretty much rule out widespread snow for the rest of February.

I suppose there's an outside chance in March - we never know if another mini-beast (2018) or a...
