European weekend weather - heat for Portugal, rain clearing from Italy and Croatia

Southern Europe sees mid-30s Celsius heat, but an unsettled Friday for Italy and the Balkans. Bands of rain in the north but some warmth too at the weekend.

Issued: 10th September 2026 15:15

Southern Europe still has some warmth, especially around the Adriatic and into the Balkans, through the end of this week, with amber warnings for temperatures reaching the mid-30s Celsius. Turkey and Greece hold onto the heat for the end of this week. Athens will be around 30 to 33C into the weekend.

As we edge into autumn in the northern hemisphere, cooler air is appearing for Scandinavia and at times over Scotland. There could even be a mention of a touch of frost for the northern half of the UK , in rural spots. As rain clears from southern Scandinavia, temperatures will recover for the weekend, up to 18C in Oslo by Sunday.

A pulse of warmer air from the Atlantic will lift temperatures over the UK on Saturday, although it will be offset by blustery winds and a band of rain sinking southwards. This warmer air will reach over western Europe. Portugal looks hot with temperatures into the mid 30s Celsius on Saturday; Lisbon up to 36C and sunny for the Algarve at 28 to 32C. Paris is warming up to 26C at the weekend from 21C on Thursday, and Nice will be around 28C.

Yellow and Amber warnings of thunderstorms, heavy rain and/or strong winds

There is a risk of thunderstorms for the Côte d’Azur on Thursday, and Europe is dotted with patches of unsettled weather. If you do have a trip coming up, Meteo Alarm is the best way to see if there are warnings of severe weather in your destination. They link to the National Meteorological agencies' information.

The low pressure close to southern France on Thursday will drift over northern Italy and brings the threat of heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds over Italy and the Adriatic for the end of the week. There are yellow and amber warnings for the Baltic States and Slovenia, with the risk of disruption here just into Saturday before pressure rises for Sunday. So, a more settled outlook.

A cold front will be moving southwest over the UK on Friday and this will bring rain to Denmark, western Norway and Oslo. This will bring damp conditions to the Low Countries on Friday then Rotterdam will see a better day on Saturday before more rain on Sunday, temperatures around 21C.

High pressure will be building from western mainland Europe right through the centre, bringing more settled conditions.

Another weather system will run in over the UK on Saturday. This band will reach Denmark on Saturday night and again dampen the weather for the Netherlands, Belgium and northern Germany through Sunday, reaching the Balkans too. This leaves a fine Sunday for the UK, once the rain band clears SE Britain.

Spain will see fine weather and warmth, Barcelona up to 29 to 31C with a small chance of a shower if you are packing for a few days. Marbella looks sunny and dry at 29C but with a breeze off the sea. There will also be wild conditions around the coasts of the Balearic Islands for the end of the week with strong winds and large waves into Friday. This should ease at the weekend as the low heads east over the Central Mediterranean and fades.
