Plans for the Bank Holiday weekend? It is looking fine and warm

The late August Bank Holiday weekend should bring plenty of fine and warm weather. There might be the odd shower, but mostly it looks bright and dry with sunny spells.

There is a Bank Holiday weekend coming up for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Schools are already back-to-school in Scotland, and no Bank Holiday Monday here in late August. Overall, there will be a lot of fine and dry weather over the long weekend, and it will feel warmer. Not the hot weather of the last heatwave, but we will lose this northerly flow, which is making it feel cool first thing in the morning and under any stubborn cloud cover.

London will see 25C at the weekend, perhaps a few degrees higher in the Home Counties. Glasgow and Belfast will be around 22 or 23C.

For the weekend, there will be plenty of dry weather. The lack of rain this summer continues to be a concern. There will be a few isolated showers, perhaps for western Britain and Northern Ireland on Saturday afternoon and again for Wales on Sunday and also inland over northern England. So expect a fine, dry day but don’t be surprised if there is a slight interruption from a shower.

When temperatures were in the high 20s and low 30s Celsius there was little cloud, plenty of sunshine and a feed of very warm air from the south. This weekend there will be a mixture of sunny spells, pockets of cloud, brighter times and light winds. Importantly, there won’t be the feed of hot air from a southern European heatwave.

There will still be cool air from the Arctic lurking over northeastern Britain on Friday evening. Northern Britain will be chilly under clear skies with temperatures dipping down into single figures inland.

Gradually, through the weekend, it will feel warmer, not just relying on the sunshine. Temperatures will be widely in the high teens to mid 20sC. The winds stay very light and there will be sunny spells. For a Bank Holiday weekend, it isn’t looking bad at all with temperatures at or just above average.

Next week, after the Bank Holiday, there could be quite a change in the UK weather depending on what ex-hurricane Erin ends up doing but for the long weekend, the outlook is fine and warm.
