A look around Europe, at the weekend sporting events and where will be hot and where will be cool and showery like the UK
Low pressure will dominate northwestern Europe with bands of frontal rain and many showers racing in from the Atlantic. Towards the Mediterranean and the far south of Europe, there will be pulses of heat
Across Europe, there is cooler air from the northwest keeping the UK rather unsettled and showery. The Epsom Derby is on this week with Ladies Day on Friday the 6th. This looks fine and will feel quite warm in sheltered sunshine, up to 20C with a bit of a blustery wind for those hats. For Derby Day on Saturday 7th, the weather forecast is rather precarious. There will be a host of heavy showers, even thundery downpours, across England but the fresh SW wind should manage to keep the line of showers to the north of London. This would leave the Surrey and the Epsom Downs in brighter weather until early evening. If you are fed up with the rain and cool air you could look elsewhere in Europe this weekend. Much warmer air is on the way to Spain and Portugal lifting temperatures into the 30s Celsius.
Cooler areas
Our cooler air will reach northern France by the weekend. It is the final of the French Open tennis in Paris. The two main courts do have roofs but for spectators at Roland Garros, the temperatures will be around 20C on Saturday with a blustery wind, and cooler on Sunday with more showers at only 17C.
Frontal rain for northern France and the English Channel later on Thursday, heading east
Denmark will see a cool weekend with the chance of a shower increasing by Sunday. Temperatures in Copenhagen will be around 15C.
In the Netherlands, there will also be a cool, showery weekend. The showers will come and go and in any brighter spells temperatures might reach 16 or 17C in Amsterdam but overall closer to 14 or 15C and take your brolly.
Heavy, thundery showers crossing southern Germany, eastern France, Switzerland and the Alps on Wednesday evening
For the semi-finals of the UEFA Men's Nations League, there is heavy rain in the forecast for Munich on Wednesday as Germany play Portugal. The other semi is on Thursday evening as Spain play France in Stuttgart with the risk of heavy even thundery showers.
The match for third place will also be in Munich Football Arena mid-afternoon on Sunday with more rain forecast. This could last for the Final on Sunday evening.
Warmer areas
If you are off to the Algarve then prepare for a leap in the temperatures. By the weekend they would have risen to 35C, well sheltered in a northerly flow. There will be strong sunshine but not as hot next week with a breeze off the sea. Lisbon will also see sunshine and temperatures into the 30sC.
The final two rounds of the ongoing Tenerife Women's Open golf will be played on Saturday, June 7th and Sunday, part of the Ladies European Tour in the Canary Islands. Both days look fine and sunny with temperatures around 25C and a light northerly breeze for Tenerife.
Only northern Spain will be affected by unsettled weather into the weekend with outbreaks of rain. Bilbao will turn cooler and wetter with temperatures of 19C in the northerly breeze on Saturday and Sunday. In the south, there will be fine weather and sunshine. Marbella up to 28C as Malaga reaches 30C and that warm air arrives.
Rome will be very warm for Friday's Diamond League Golden Gala, World Athletics meet. The fine weather will last through the weekend with strong sunshine, dry weather and temperatures in the low 30s Celsius. That heat lasts into next week.
