Gradual warm-up expected across the UK

Milder air is on the way for the UK, bringing a gradual end to the recent cold spell. Sunday will see a mix of sunshine and showers, with some wintriness possible in the north. As we head into Monday, milder temperatures will start to spread from the SW, but it will also turn more unsettled in the west.

Issued: 16th February 2025 10:31

A deep and very large depression in the mid-Atlantic will finally bring milder air to all parts this week, clearing the cold, depressing gloom that has plagued particularly central and eastern areas for the last ten days or so. This will be good news for sufferers of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) with some spring-like weather possible in the East and South by next weekend.

Sunday

But for the meantime, expect another gloomy, damp, cold day for some, before Monday turns brighter, mainly in the East and South. While temperatures will eventually be on the rise, it will also be turning more unsettled from the West, after a couple of mainly dry days further East. But the process will be a slow one, with the milder air not arriving in the East until mid-week.

A few places may brighten with a little hazy sun, but after a grey morning for most with mist, drizzle and even a little snow in some eastern parts at first, the remainder of Sunday continues mostly overcast and dreary. But it will be predominantly dry, apart from some showers across Northern Ireland and parts of East Scotland where they will drift in off the North Sea on an Easterly breeze and could be wintry on hills. Top temperatures 3 to 6C, but it will be milder in the far West.

Sunday Night

After dark, Northern Ireland sees further patchy rain, this spreading to parts of West Scotland where hill snow is likely. But for most it will be a cold and misty night, with extensive areas of low cloud. Where skies break there will be a touch of frost with temperatures falling to freezing or just below, but it will be milder across Northern Ireland and in the far West in a mostly East or South Easterly breeze.

Monday

The new working week begins cold, misty and gloomy across much of England, Wales and East Scotland, but apart from the odd shower towards coasts of Aberdeen and Moray that will be wintry on hills, it will be mainly dry. Through the day skies will brighten here and there, but more especially in the East and South East where you may see some spells of hazy winter sunshine. Top temperatures here just 4 to 6C.

Monday across the South West, Northern Ireland and West Scotland will be somewhat milder but with showers, wintry on Scottish hills. Here, an East or South Easterly wind will be more noticeable and will feel cold, but this should not prevent temperatures from reaching 7 to 9C and perhaps double figures in the far South West.

Monday Night

It continues cold in central and eastern areas into the evening and overnight, where it should stay predominantly dry. It will turn misty and where skies clear a touch of frost is again possible. Further West it will be gradually turning milder but more unsettled, with bursts of rain as Atlantic systems begin to move in. Here, a South East or southerly wind could become quite fresh by morning, but while still perhaps feeling on the chilly side, temperatures will not fall below 5 to 7C.
