Brisk Winds and Showers Make for a Chilly End To The Weekend

The changeable weather continues. Expect bursts of rain and a brisk wind, with only glimpses of sunshine as we end the weekend and move into the start of the new working week.

Issued: 10th March 2024 11:35

Pressure remains high over Scandinavia, with a depression off western France ‘feeding’ a chilly, bracing easterly or north-easterly wind off the nearby continent across Britain. It’s also more unsettled now, with the current dose of ‘northern blocking’ coinciding today with the new moon/perigee, the moon’s closest approach to Earth. As we near the equinox, that may bring high spring tides and the risk of coastal flooding.

Today: A cold ‘Mothering Sunday’ with leaden skies & bursts of rain

Not the best of weather if you’re venturing out, with a sensible treat for mother probably a nice meal in a cosy pub or restaurant on a rather cold, dull day for most. We have showery rain in the East, South East, across the north and southern Scotland, that’ll soon spread to Northern Ireland. This’ll tend to move westwards through the day, with central southern England and much of Wales beginning mainly dry. But showers in the South West, some heavy, will develop elsewhere, with here together with Highland Scotland one of the few places you’ll see any sunshine today.

It’ll feel cold in a blustery easterly or north-easterly wind, which will be fresh and blustery east of the Pennines and along exposed parts of the coast. As a result, temperatures will be no higher than 6 to 9°C, with 10 or 11°C briefly possible in the South and South West where you see any brightness.

Tonight: cold wind, more showers, becoming drier further north

Bursts of rain move into Wales and the South but largely clear from the North, leaving scattered showers. Many of these will be in the East towards North Sea coasts, which could turn wintry over the higher hills of Scotland. Most parts keep a lot of cloud but where skies do break there’ll be a touch of frost, most likely towards Highland and in sheltered glens of West Scotland.

Although cold and feeling raw, the north-easterly or northerly wind coupled with the cloud will help prevent temperatures from falling below 3 to 6°C in most parts. But where you see any clearances, these mainly over the North and West of Scotland. Some sheltered glens will see a touch of frost.

Tomorrow: showers mostly in the east; but a lot of cloud generally

The East and South East remain most prone to showers, particularly towards the coast, with Northern Ireland perhaps seeing some rain moving in from the West later. Elsewhere, while there’ll be some improvement, most places keep a lot of cloud, and here too, you won’t be immune from catching a shower on a mixed day. A northerly wind continues to feel cold in the East and South East, but elsewhere expect lighter breezes. So, on another day on the chilly side for the time of year, temperatures get no higher than 6 to 9°C, with 10 or 11°C again possible where you see any brightness.

Monday night: a slight frost; becoming wet over Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland and the South may see some rain with a few showers elsewhere, and while most places remain rather cloudy, skies will break here and there. Mostly light breezes could allow patchy fog and a touch of frost to develop but most parts should avoid this, with lowest temperatures mostly in the range 2 to 6°C.
