Drier today after a wet February, but more rain on the way this week

Most places dry today, frosty tonight before rain returns on Tuesday heralding a return to more unsettled and windy rest of week and turning chillier too, with wintriness over northern hills later in the week.

Issued: 26th February 2024 11:44

It’s been very wet this month across many areas of England and Wales, with over double the average February rainfall in places even before the end of the month and it could be one of the wettest Februarys since records began. More rain across the south in the last 24 hours has added another inch of rain in places.

Data from Starling Roost Weather

Fortunately, a ridge of high pressure looks to build in to start this week, leading to a largely dry Monday. However, it looks to turn increasingly unsettled again for the rest of the week, as Atlantic frontal systems move in off the Atlantic, bringing spells of rain or showers. Most of the rain or showers across northern and western areas. Also cold polar air filtering in from the west later in the week, with showers turning increasingly wintry across the north.

Today

A further inch of rain or more fell across the far south of England overnight, but the rain will clear the far southeast this morning, leaving most places dry though it will remain cloudy across southern and eastern areas until the afternoon, with a brisk northeasterly wind blowing in a few streamers of showers towards the east. Best of the sunshine across northern and western areas. A strong northeasterly wind across southern England – making it feel cold here today, despite temperatures reaching 8-10C generally across England and Wales.

Skies clearing this evening and overnight so turning cold and frosty across England and Wales ahead of a band of thickening cloud and rain accompanied by strengthening winds spreading southeast across Scotland in the early hours.

Tuesday

Bright but cold and frosty, with mist or fog in places, across southern, central and eastern areas to start Tuesday, before a band of cloud and increasingly patchy rain clearing southeast from Scotland across northern England and N. Ireland through the morning arrives in the afternoon across southern Britain, though not much rain left by then. Brighter conditions but with blustery showers following the band of cloud and rain moving southeast across England and Wales. Showers wintry over higher ground of Scotland. Remaiing on the chilly side towards southern and eastern England, afetr the cold start, where temperatures will reach 7-8C at best, elsewhere temperatures reaching 8-10C.

Wednesday

Weak cold front clears the southeast Tuesday night, showers easing in the north then after a mostly dry night with a rural frost developing in places, so a bright and a chilly start to Wednesday before cloud and showery rain spreads in from the west across most parts during the day, followed by a spell of heavier rain and strong winds across the north Wednesday night.

Thursday & Friday

Unsettled on Thursday, with strong winds and spells of rain spreading east in the morning clearing to sunnier conditions in the afternoon, but with showers in the northwest – which will turn increasingly wintry across Scotland. Turning chillier across all parts following morning rain clearing.

Increasingly wintry precipitation over hills in the north and west later in the week as cold air digs in...

Another spell of perhaps squally rain clearing southeast across England and Wales Friday morning, followed by brighter conditions with showers across the north and west, falling as snow over higher ground. Rather windy on Friday, especially in the west, thus feeling cold.

Weekend

Low pressure looks like loitering close by next weekend, but slowly filling, so winds easing. But there will be some showers around and with the air cold enough for showers to fall wintry in nature, with snow over hills. Some bright or sunny spells too.
