Turning drier in the south as high pressure builds, and all parts turning milder

High pressure set to build in across the south by the end of the week, so turning drier for southern areas. Atlantic fronts and brisk southwesterly breeze will keep northern areas cloudier with rain at times in the northwest. North south-split through weekend too, but mild for all.

Issued: 13th December 2023 10:17

Tuesday was a rather wet day across parts of the UK, with over 25mm (1 inch) of rain falling across parts of central and eastern Scotland from persistent rain, and across Wales and southern England from frequent heavy and thundery showers.

Thankfully it’s looking to turn drier and more settled for the rest of the week for much of England and Wales, as high pressure builds in from the southwest – with an anticyclone becoming quite strong across the south, pressure perhaps reaching 1040 hPa across southern England this weekend. Scotland on the edge of the high pressure system becoming centred over northern France, so will be more exposed to a brisk and moist Atlantic flow, and so will see more in the way of cloud and some rain at times across the west. However, it will turn milder for all, with temperatures reaching double figures widely over the weekend.

Today

It’s a cold start to the day across the north, temperature of -7C at Altnaharra in the far north of Scotland at 8am and temperatures widely at or below freezing across the Highlands of Scotland at breakfast time. Some freezing fog patches too across northern Scotland, which may linger through the morning. More in the way of cloud and a brisk northerly breeze across England and Wales has generally kept temperatures above freezing overnight. There are some scattered showers around too this morning blowing south in the northerly breeze.

Today is looking less wet, after a damp start across England Wales. Showers or patchy drizzle this morning across England and Wales will become increasingly restricted to central and eastern areas of England through the day, turning drier and brighter from the west elsewhere. Temperatures reaching 5-6C at best across northern and eastern Scotland, lower where fog lingers, elsewhere across Scotland, N. Ireland, England and Wales reaching 7-9C.

Tonight

Then tonight, a set of fronts will push eastwards off the Atlantic, bringing thickening cloud and outbreaks of rain east across Scotland and N. Ireland, falling as snow for a time over high ground of Scotland. Cloud and patchy rain eventually spreading in across Wales, northern, central and western areas of England in the early hours. SE England and East Anglia dry and turning cold with patchy frost forming as skies clear.

Thursday

A weakening frontal system will reach southern and eastern England Thursday morning, bringing a band of cloud and patchy light rain or drizzle - which will clear eastern England in the afternoon. Elsewhere, brightening up from the west through the morning after a cloudy and damp start, with sunny spells developing, but windy with blustery showers affecting the northwest. Temperatures reaching 7-9C generally, 10-11C across the southwest.

Friday

Turning chilly Thursday night towards the south and east, perhaps cold enough for a touch of frost in sheltered areas. Then staying generally calm, dry and bright or sunny across southern, central and eastern England during daylight, as high pressure builds in. Northern and western areas generally cloudier, with a brisk southwesterly wind across the northwest bringing persistent rain to western Scotland, particularly on the windward slopes of higher ground. Milder day across northern and western areas – where temperatures look to reach 10-11C, cooler 7-8C across central, southern and eastern areas after a cold start.

Weekend

High pressure will generally dominate the weather across southern Britain over the weekend, this will keep Atlantic fronts away out to the north and northwest. So east Wales, much of central, southern eastern England will remain dry, calm and bright or sunny over the weekend. West Wales, NW England, N. Ireland and Scotland will have a brisk southwesterly wind and be prone to seeing more in the way of cloud and some patchy drizzle or light rain over hills and coasts, a spell of more persistent rain looks to affect western Scotland, NW England, N. Ireland and perhaps north Wales for a time on Sunday. Mild everywhere though, temperatures widely reaching 12-13C by day, with no risk of frost overnight.

Next week

Next week sees high pressure across the south to start the week begin to move west towards the centre of the North Atlantic. Mostly dry in the south Monday and Tuesday, bar a cold front bringing a band of rain through Monday night, unsettled and windy conditions across the north – with showers or longer spells of rain – spreading south across all parts from mid-week. Turning colder too by the end of the week, as winds turn northwesterly, with a risk of showers or rain turning to sleet and snow in the north, particularly over hills.
