Week Ahead: Unsettled & Often Windy With Spells Of Rain Or Showers

A strong jet stream over the UK and low pressure in charge for much of the coming week means unsettled weather continuing, so often windy with spells of rain or showers at times.

Sunday will see rain easing across Scotland and northern England through the morning, but we could see heavy rain linger across eastern England. However, further west it will be a drier and brighter picture on the whole. The last few weeks have seen the weather stuck in an unsettled rut and through the coming week there are no signs of this theme changing unfortunately, with a strong jet stream over the UK and low pressure in charge bringing spells of rain or showers and often windy.

Today

Heavy rain crossed many areas overnight and will linger across northern and eastern areas through the morning, where we could see a lot of surface spray on roads and also a risk of localised flooding. The Met Office have a yellow warning for rain out for northern and eastern areas until noon today and a separate area for Lincolnshire and East Anglia until 5pm.

Although rain should ease across Scotland and northern England through the morning and into the afternoon, across eastern England the rain will linger and we could see some torrential downpours develop, perhaps with the odd rumble of thunder, before the rain clears this evening.

Further west though, much of southern England, Midlands, Wales, Northern Ireland, NW England, northern and western Scotland will see increasing amounts of sunshine through the morning and into the afternoon, dry for many, but there will be some scattered showers affecting western areas, some of which will be on the heavy side, but they will be hit-and-miss.  Temperatures this afternoon reaching 12-13C at best across northern and eastern areas – where it will be breezy and we see the cloud and rain linger, but across brighter southern, central and western areas temperatures should reach 15-18C.

Tonight

Continuing rather cloudy across eastern areas of Scotland and England this evening and overnight, but the rain easing across eastern England. Elsewhere showers fading in the west to leave a dry first half of the night with clear spells, before cloud, rain and strong winds spreads in across the island of Ireland by midnight, before reaching SW England, Wales, NW England and much of Scotland by dawn. Some mist and fog patches forming in the east with all the moisture around.

Monday

A deep area of low pressure will spin northeast over the Atlantic and slow to the south of Iceland where it will fill early next week. This low will bring windy conditions on Monday, with gales across the north and west while also pushing a band of cloud and rain from west to east during the day, heavy in the north and west in the morning, though the rain tending to fragment and weaken as it reaches the east. Wind gusts of 40-50mph possible in the north and west, perhaps 50-60mph in the far northwest, gusts of 30-40 mph elsewhere. Temperatures reaching 12-16C.

Rest of the week

That area of low pressure still close to the northwest on Tuesday, isobars still tightly packed, so another windy day, especially in the far northwest – where there will be further gales. The strong southwesterly wind will drive through showers across many areas, heaviest and most frequent in the west. There will be some sunshine between the showers. Little change in temperatures, 12-16C.

A similar day to Tuesday on Wednesday and Thursday with low pressure in charge close to the north, both blustery days with showers or longer spells of rain, some bright or sunny spells. On Thursday there could be a frontal system coming in off the Atlantic that could bring a more organised area of rain in places. Friday may see England and Wales become drier and brighter through much of the day, cloud, rain and strong winds becoming focused across Scotland and Northern Ireland instead.
