Feeling cold as the bank holiday weekend gets underway

The bank holiday weekend is with us, and it'll be chilly but dry for many. There will be some sharp, even wintry showers in places though.

Issued: 4th May 2019 05:34

If you have outdoor plans this weekend, it'll certainly be a plan to wear a jumper and a coat, as it's definitely not going to be a warm one. In fact, we'll be seeing frosts overnight, some wintry showers and temperatures just about struggling into double-figures in most places. There will be a decent amount of sunshine to be had though.

It's the eastern side of the country which will be seeing most of the showers on Saturday, with western regions faring best when it comes to the sunshine. The showers in the east will be quite well scattered but could be on the heavy side if you catch one with hail and thunder possible, along with some snow over the hills.

Showers in the east on Saturday

Highs will peak in the west and south, getting to 10-12c. Elsewhere, 9-11c will be more like it, but feeling colder in the northerly wind, which'll be strongest in the east.

Northerly winds on Saturday

More frost is likely overnight, then into Sunday there should be less showers about in the east, to leave many areas with long sunny spells. But it will still feel cold, especially without some shelter from the wind. Later in the day, a band of showery rain, with sleet and snow over the hills, will move down from into Scotland from the northeast though.

Bank holiday Monday continues with the chilly theme, after more frost overnight. The showers will be more pronounced than Sunday too, with more of them working down from the northeast into Scotland and northern England in particular. The west and south will be best placed to stay dry and have more sunshine once more.

Temperatures on Sunday afternoon

Beyond the holiday weekend, Tuesday may see some warmer temperatures arriving into the south, but more showers continuing to affect many areas. Then by Wednesday a change to wetter, windier weather beckons as Atlantic low pressure systems come our way.
