UK Heatwave Continues In This Week, No Rain For Many

Dry and settled conditions to prevail this week, highest temperatures in the south, no end in sight to the heatwave.

The highest temperature on Sunday was 32.2C in Gosport in Hampshire and with high pressure remaining generally in control throughout the coming week, the heat will keep on coming for southern Britain and it will be humid too. 30C likely to be reached somewhere in the south most days and certainly widely in the mid to high twenties for many, a little cooler, fresher and more comfortable in the north this week compared to last week though. Little or no rain in the forecast this coming week either, though with high pressure weakening through the week, it will bring a slim chance of catching an isolated thundery downpour developing in the heat of the afternoons. So, it looks to stay dry and hot for the first week of Wimbledon.

Today

For now, there is a big temperature contrast between the far north and far south of Britain first thing, with temperatures falling as low as 4C in the NW Highlands of Scotland, whilst Plymouth in Devon was already 22C at 6am. So, it’s been a warm, sticky and uncomfortable night’s sleep for some in the south, with temperatures falling no lower than the high teens or even low twenties.

From the word go it will be warm, dry and sunny for most this morning, which will lead into another largely dry day with mostly blue skies and lengthy spells of warm sunshine. A bit more in the way of mid-level cloud across central southern and southwest England this morning could produce a few showers and also a few thunderstorms lurking over the English Channel could clip Devon and Cornwall in the next few hours, before showers ease and clear into the afternoon. Morning cloud across northern and eastern Scotland will tend to clear as well to leave a sunny afternoon.

Some fresher air moving in across Scotland today, so a more comfortable 16-22C up here, northern England and Northern Ireland reaching 20-23C, Wales, central, southern and eastern England easily 25-29C, perhaps 30-31C in a few spots.

A balmy dry evening will lead into a dry night with clear spells away from North Sea coasts and NW Scotland – where we will see cloud moving down. Temperatures falling no lower than the mid to high teens in the south, where it will be muggy too, a cooler and more comfortable 8-13C in the north.

Tuesday

On the whole another dry and sunny day on Tuesday, temperatures widely reaching the mid twenties, even across southern Scotland. Cooler around the coasts. Just a small chance of catching a thundery shower across the far southwest of England.

High pressure does weaken through the week, allowing some showers to break out in the afternoons, but most staying dry

Wednesday

High pressure begins to weaken a little from mid-week, so a increased chance, albeit still small risk, of catching an isolated heavy thundery downpour developing in the heat of the afternoon across central and southern areas. Most places staying dry with light winds and mostly clear skies which will bring another very warm and sunny day, temperatures away from the coasts reaching the mid-twenties, locally high twenties across central and southern areas.

Thursday & Friday

Little change on Thursday and Friday, mostly dry with prolonged sunshine for many, temperatures widely reaching the mid-twenties inland, high 20s in the south – where it will be humid too. A cold front moving in off the Atlantic on Thursday will bring more in the way of cloud for a time and perhaps the odd shower to Scotland and Northern Ireland through the day, also a few isolated thundery downpours could develop again elsewhere in the afternoons.

Afternoon thundery showers developing, but mostly isolated with many missing them and staying dry

Next Weekend

High pressure still looks to be in control next weekend too, so staying largely dry and fine with very warm sunshine, a continued risk of isolated thundery showers, but most will stay dry with very little rain on the horizon for many.
