Bank Holiday Weather May Have A Bad Reputation But It's Come Good This Time

Bank Holidays and washouts seem to go hand in hand but that's not going to happen this weekend.

Issued: 5th May 2018 09:21

For some reason, Bank Holidays seem to get a bad name as far as the weather is concerned, so it's nice to report a dry, warm, fine weekend ahead, as high pressure dominates. So there'll be plenty of scope for visiting the many attractions up and down the country, or for a trip to the coast. Alternatively, you could give the lawn a mow but if you're thinking of putting in any tender plants, beware as we may not be 'out of the woods' in the next few weeks yet as far as late frosts are concerned.

A weak front is giving mist and patchy sea fog in the West in a dull start across the far South West, West Wales, Northern Ireland and West Scotland. Apart from a little drizzle in places though, it's dry. North West England and southern Scotland also have patchy cloud, but this'll break up through the morning, with the far South West and districts around Cardigan Bay also becoming brighter. For remaining areas though, it's simply going to be a beautiful day with lots of sunshine once remaining mist at first has cleared. Some patchy cloud will develop later, but this shouldn't spoil a lovely day too much.

Winds will be mostly light from between East and South, but across Northern Ireland and the West of Scotland, a southerly breeze will be more noticeable. Where it remains grey, temperatures will struggle to reach 11 to 13C, but in the sunshine, it'll become warm or very warm by the afternoon, with top temperatures 18 to 22C and locally 23 or 24C to the West of London. Sea breezes, however, will keep some coasts cooler.

Temperatures today

Highland and the far North may see skies clearing later in the night making it chilly in some glens by morning, while the West of Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland particularly towards Donegal keep a lot of mist and low cloud that may be thick enough to give a little drizzle in places. Most parts though will have a lovely summery evening followed by a largely clear night. Light winds will allow mist and patchy fog to form, but this'll be relatively short-lived. It's not expected to be a cold night though, with minimum temperatures mostly between 6 and 10C.

As high pressure continues to dominate, Sunday will be another nice day, with a good deal of sunshine once early mist and patchy fog has cleared. As ever there'll be a few exceptions, with much of the North of Scotland beginning dull and misty. There'll also be patchy light rain or drizzle, which should tend to clear from the South through the day. West Scotland and some Irish Sea coasts may also be grey and misty at times, while much of Northern Ireland should be finer and sunnier than yesterday.

Weather map for Sunday - sunny for most

With winds remaining mostly light from between East and South, it'll be another warm or very warm afternoon in most parts, with top temperatures 18 to 23C. Some central and southern parts though could see the thermometer reach 24 or 25C locally in another beautiful day. Across the North of Scotland and where low cloud and mist persists in the West, a cooler 12 or 13C is more likely. Afternoon sea breezes will also keep temperatures down in some coastal areas.

Temperatures tomorrow

Northern Scotland remains cloudy, with the odd light shower, while low cloud and mist continue to plague some Irish Sea coasts but for most, another summery evening will be followed by a fine clear night. It'll turn misty again in places with patchy fog forming in rural areas, but this'll be short-lived soon dispersing after sunrise. In another mild night, temperatures shouldn't fall below 7 to 11C.

The fine weather will continue into Bank Holiday Monday although by Tuesday, it'll begin to turn cooler and fresh from the West. It'll then become somewhat unsettled particularly in the North and West with occasional rain or showers.
