Bank holiday weather looking warm this weekend across the UK. Sunshine too

Temperatures are rising for the long weekend. There will be sunshine and 18 to 25 maybe 26C is possible. Rain troubling NW Scotland with more cloud but overall not bad for a Bank Holiday

Issued: 3rd May 2018 09:25

Strangely it looks like warmer air will move up through the UK for the end of the working week. Stick around for the Bank Holiday and then fade as most people return to work, with a return to cooler conditions for the rest of next week. When does that happen?

Overall there will be a lot of fine, bright even sunny weather with just a few areas of thicker cloud. So, if you are considering outdoor plans for the long weekend, it’s not looking too bad at all with London and the SE hotting up into the mid-20s Celsius by Sunday and Monday.

Thickness chart showing warmer air this weekend from SE

Today much of Britain has a fine bright but cool start. High cloud is filtering in from the west and there is rain over Ireland. This is from a warm from which will move over Northern Ireland and then Scotland this morning as another occluding front moves in from the Atlantic. The rain turns more patchy quickly. This shouldn’t affect morning voters for the English elections but there could be a few showery outbreaks this afternoon for the Midlands and damp, grey weather for NW England this afternoon and evening. Worth looking at #dogsatpollingstations on Twitter for a bit of fun.

Rain over Ireland this morning on radar

The SW wind picks up for the NW half of the UK, so blustery over Ireland, Scotland, NW Wales and the far north of England, especially the hills. The rest of Wales and England will have light to moderate winds and will feel okay in the sunshine. Temperatures will be between 11C on western coasts and 15 or 16C for inland England. Scotland and Northern Ireland will be cool with more wind and cloud, also the outbreaks of rain. Temperatures of 10 to 13C.

The winds ease off overnight, but a lot of cloud remains, so it won’t be as chilly as last night when temperatures dipped to around freezing for parts of eastern and northern Britain.,

By Friday there will be high tree pollen levels for Scotland, northern and eastern England, moderate for the rest of the UK.

Friday looks lovely for Northern Ireland with afternoon sunshine and warmth, up to 17C and a fine evening. More cloud over Britain and temperatures in the low to mid-teens if you have 4th of May plans. Not warm and humid luckily for those in costume.

The Tour de Yorkshire starts today and there will be plenty of fine, bright even sunny weather as the cyclists undertake the four-day event. Winds will be light with temperatures rising at the weekend maybe 20/21C.

UV levels are rising through the weekend so remember your sunscreen, even if it is a bit cloudy.

High pressure just about holds on to bring a fine, settled few days over the long weekend. There is a frontal system lurking away to the NW which brings more cloud and rain to NW Scotland. This front will wave southwards at some point, but whereas some models show more cloud, a little light rain and cooler air pulling down from the north on Sunday, the Netweather model holds off until Monday. Even then where the sunshine comes through it will still seem okay and the front isn’t that active. This is something to keep an eye on for Northern Ireland and Scotland. Further south, England and Wales look like staying fair.

Saturday

Light SW winds for most, brisk in the far north. Early cloud and mist especially for western coasts but overall a fine day with temperatures in the mid to high teens, maybe low 20s east of the Pennines inland.

Sunday

Warmer. Far north of Scotland seeing rain and more cloud. Most of UK having a fine, bright day with sunshine and warmth for England and Wales. Again, a SW breeze cooling down western coasts. Mid to high teens widely. Low twenties for a fair part of England and 23C in London

Bank Holiday Monday

By Monday there could be cooler and cloudier conditions over Northern Ireland and Scotland if the frontal band moves southwards. So, for the Belfast marathon, it won’t be as warm, around 14C although the cloudy could break up. Good luck to everyone running.

This slight change over Northern Ireland will reach the western half of Scotland, maybe through the Central Belt, feeling cooler with a more southerly wind and cloudy. Rest of Britain still warm with sunshine and light winds. With light winds and continuing warmth 25 or 26C is showing up on the charts for London, might be higher.

If you do have time off, enjoy the break and fine weather
