Winter Cold, Heavy Rain & Even Wet Snow Bites Back Monday, But Warming By Late Week

Sunday sees the best weather again in the north and west, southern and eastern areas will have another cool and cloudy day. Persistent rain will spread into SE England later from the near continent, as a deepening area of low pressure moves north over France toward the Low Countries. This low pressure system close to the southeast will bring steady rain accompanied by a strong to gale force northeasterly wind across SE England and East Anglia throughout Monday and with temperatures here more akin to winter, with London perhaps only reaching 6C, higher ground may even see wet some snow!

Further rain or showers are likely to spread from the west across most parts mid-week and across the north later in the week, but becoming drier and sunnier in the south and temperatures at least returning to average for most by the Bank Holiday Weekend.

Today

For now, it’s still a cloudy picture across southern, central and eastern areas of England this morning, but elsewhere it’s a bright but chilly start, with temperatures falling below freezing across the northern Highlands and just a few degrees above elsewhere across the north – bringing a patchy frost in places.

Southern England, the Midlands and much of eastern England will hang onto grey skies again today, thick enough to bring occasional drizzle with mist over higher ground, these conditions perhaps creeping further west into east Wales. Elsewhere across the far west, northern England, Scotland and N. Ireland will have a bright day with sunny spells and some scattered showers, these heaviest across Northern Ireland – where they’ll be slow-moving too.

A cool north to northeasterly wind today, highest temperatures in the far west – where we see the sun – perhaps reaching 10-12C, in the east perhaps staying in single figures with the northeast wind off the cold North Sea – reaching 8-9C at best. But everywhere temperatures below what they should be for late April.

Tonight

More persistent rain moving in across southeast England from the near continent this evening, before extending across the Midlands and further north across eastern England through the night. Rain becoming heavy in the southeast – accompanied by a strengthening strong northeast wind. Drier elsewhere as any showers fade and with clearing skies in the north it will turn cold, with patchy frost developing across Scotland.

Monday

A cold, wet and windy Monday for SE England, parts of the Midlands, East Anglia and Lincolnshire, the rain locally heavy and persistent – the Met Office have a Yellow Warning out for the rain – which may cause some issues. Some of the rain could turn to sleet or even snow over higher ground too, though unlikely to settle. Further north and west, a mostly fine, sunny and dry day, just a few showers in the far west. Temperatures only reaching 6-7C at best under the cloud and rain, but in the sunshine 9-13C.

Tuesday

Still the remnants of tomorrow’s cloud and rain hanging on across eastern coastal areas of England on Tuesday for a time, another band of cloud and rain moving in off the Atlantic across Ireland and Northern Ireland, but in between, mostly dry and bright or sunny, temperatures reaching 9-12C.

Rest of the week

Cloud and rain spreading east on Wednesday morning, followed by brighter skies and a few showers from the west in the afternoon. Cloudy with outbreaks of rain across Scotland on Thursday, followed by sunshine and showers on Friday. England and Wales mostly dry and bright or sunny and warming up into the mid to high teens in the south and generally temperatures recovering to where they should be for late April.
