What A Difference A Week Makes! 16c Possible Today

Milder air is pushing north today, with 16c a possibility. It's not all about the mildness though, as there's also some heavy rain moving north with it. Sunny spells and showers follow behind.

There are huge variations across the country this morning, as milder air pushes up from the South. At Altnaharra in the Scottish Highlands, the temperature fell to -8C (18F) last night. In complete contrast, residents of Camborne in Cornwall are waking to 12C (54F). As milder air continues to spread North through the day, all parts will eventually feel much more spring-like.

So, it's a very cold but bright start to the morning over the North of Scotland. Any sunshine though will be short-lived, with cloud soon arriving from the South bringing rain to all parts. This'll be preceded by snow mostly on hills, which will turn to rain as the milder air moves in. It's already wet over central and southern Scotland, and this'll continue on and off through the day, with the rain heavy at times. It'll also be very misty, with some mostly hill and coastal fog.

After a very wet night across England and Wales, we still have a swathe of rain some of it heavy across Northern Ireland and northern England. This'll clear to the North only to be quickly followed by showers some of which will be heavy, that are already affecting, North Wales, the Midlands and Lincolnshire. Further South it's cloudy and somewhat drier, but here too there'll be a scattering of showers already over Cornwall and Devon before brighter weather moves in from the South to reach all but the North of England by dusk.

It'll feel noticeably milder as temperatures reach 11 to 13C but in any sunshine, a spring-like 14 or 15 maybe 16C is possible, over East Anglia and the South East. There'll be a mostly moderate southerly breeze, but over Scotland, a fresh East wind will feel raw before decreasing in the South later. Top temperatures here no higher than 5 or 6C in the North and 7 to 9C in the South.

Outbreaks of rain soon move away from the far North of England into the evening but continue for a while across Scotland before clearing from all but the Northern Isles by dawn. This'll leave damp, misty conditions overnight with the odd shower 'dotted' about. Where skies break, the Central Lowlands, in particular, will see patchy fog forming especially in rural areas. Elsewhere there'll also be a few showers mostly across Northern Ireland and in the West and South. Here too it'll turn misty in a milder night and with a southerly breeze mostly light, patchy locally dense fog will form in rural areas where skies break. Although milder, there could still be a touch of ground frost by morning especially in vulnerable rural regions, with temperatures generally not falling below 2 to 6C.

Overnight temperatures

Sunday may start dull, misty and wet across the Northern Isles, but this'll clear to the North. We'll then virtually all be 'in the same boat' in a mixed day, as pressure remains quite low across the country. Some parts see sunshine from the word go, while a fair number of places begin grey and murky with patches of fog and very low cloud that'll lift through the morning. Where the sun comes through it'll become quite pleasant, and some places will stay dry, but anywhere could catch a shower. These'll be mostly in the South at first where some will become heavy by the afternoon perhaps giving thunder, with probably more in the way of showers 'cropping-up' across Wales, the Midlands and East Anglia later.

Thunderstorms possible on Sunday

Winds will be mostly light or moderate from between East and South, but fresher towards the South coast. It'll remain mild with top temperatures 11 to 13C, but only 8 to 10C further North and where morning murk is perhaps slow to lift.

The weather remains in a mixed mood after dark, with England particularly the South West, South Wales and Northern Ireland most subject to showers. Scotland, however, should see fewer showers. It'll turn misty in a mostly light East or South Easterly breeze, with patchy fog forming again. A ground frost is likely in rural areas where skies clear, as temperatures fall chiefly to between 1 and 5C.
