Week Ahead: Changeable, Mild, Wet & Windy At Times, But A Cold End

We are in for quite an active period of weather this week, as a succession of low pressure systems move northeast off the Atlantic across the UK. These lows will generally track across northern Britain, dragging mild air across most of the UK much of the week and bringing wet and windy conditions at times too. However, cold air will flirt with northern Scotland on the polar side of these lows moving through, bringing a threat of hill snow at times. The cold air in the far north eventually coming south by the end of the week, as low pressure becomes confined to the northeast and pressure rises to the west.

Today

For now, Monday starts on a cloudy and damp note for most. It has been particularly wet across Scotland overnight and so far this morning, with snow falling over northern Scottish mountains where the cold air lingers. Elsewhere, there is some patchy light rain or drizzle, persistent light rain over western hills. It’s windy across Wales and SW England, with gales around exposed coasts, increasingly breezy elsewhere across England and Wales, the southwesterly wind bringing mild air in across western parts where temperatures are already in double figures, while northern and eastern areas are still in single figures.

Although the more persistent rain and hill snow across Scotland this morning will ease away eastwards, the mild and moist flow of air from the southwest across the UK for the rest of today will mean sunshine will be hard to come by, with cloud thick enough to bring further patchy light rain or drizzle in places. But some sunny spells will develop, mostly to the east of high ground.

A much milder day than Sunday, apart from across northern Scotland where colder air hangs on. Temperatures reaching 11-13C across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, 7-9C across Scotland, but across northern mainland Scotland and the Northern Isles, only 3-6C.

Tonight

This evening and overnight, another spell of more persistent rain will spread from the west across Northern Ireland, then Scotland and northern England, falling as snow over hills of northern Scotland. Some patchy rain developing across western hills, while central and eastern England remain mostly dry, mild but cloudy.

Tuesday

Tuesday will be rather mild, breezy or windy and mostly cloudy again, persistent and locally heavy rain will affect Scotland for much of the day, falling as snow initially over high ground in the north before turning back to rain. England, Wales and N. Ireland will see outbreaks of rain over western hills, patchy drizzle further east. Temperatures perhaps reaching the mid-teens in the far south and west, generally 12-13C over England and Wales, 9-11C for southern Scotland, so very mild for the second half of November.

Wednesday

Persistent rain looks likely across southern Scotland, northern England, N. Ireland and Wales throughout Wednesday, cloudy, mild and windy further south and east. Northern Scotland brighter but colder with a strong easterly wind developing later.

Thursday & Friday

Persistent rain across the northeast and overnight heavy, perhaps thundery rain showers across England and Wales clearing Thursday morning to brighter and drier but windy conditions on Thursday, though cloud and persistent rain will probably return to Scotland. This rain spreading quickly southeast across all parts Thursday night, followed by a colder, brighter but showery strong northwesterly flow on Friday, showers mostly across the north and west and turning increasingly wintry across Scotland.

Next weekend

A cold weekend likely to follow, with a strong north to northwesterly flow direct from the arctic throughout, feeding in sleet and snow showers across the far north and northwestern parts. Elsewhere dry, sunny but cold, with a risk of widespread frost overnight under clear skies.
