A cold start with a touch of frost, milder for Halloween

Frost in places this morning, down to -3C inland. Western Scotland will have a lot of rain over the next few days but for most not bad and not as cold.

Issued: 30th October 2017 08:05

It’s been clear, calm and cold overnight resulting in a few icy windscreens and inland frost, a chill in the air and yet some lovely sunshine. Have you found the de-icer? Did you change the clocks (including that pesky one in the car) and we’ve got Halloween and Bonfire Night coming up, it's all go.

The UK weather is starting on a less busy note, with high pressure building, bringing a settled Monday for most. The unsettled weekend weather cleared off to central, northern Europe drawing down this cold Arctic air behind, yet resulting in severe weather for Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic. High winds and lake waves resulted in at least six deaths and a freight train derailment.

Temperatures in Scotland have dipped down to -5C with a few -1 and -2s dotted about for inland Britain. Many areas are clear, bright or sunny with blue skies and a chill in the air. There are still a few well scattered showers running down the North Sea into Norfolk and Suffolk. It will be a fine, crisp autumn day. Temperatures will only reach 10 or 11C for England and Wales as southern England keeps very light winds. Frontal rain is already reaching western Scotland with more cloud draped into Northern Ireland. The warm fronts will bring more cloud and outbreaks of rain across northern Scotland with just a bit more medium/high cloud for the rest of northern Britain. Southerly winds pick up and Northern Ireland could reach 11 or 12C, but Scotland will struggle at a cool 8 or 9C.

Cool again for England tonight with a moderate SW wind for the UK away from the south. Further north another band of rain will push in, but bring more definite rain clipping Northern Ireland as it heads to western Scotland. Overnight this spills over more of Scotland and northern England with a lot more cloud and less cold air.

Tuesday

The overnight rain will still be draped over Scotland, perhaps also over northeast England to start the day. It will then clear off into the North Sea leaving a fine cool start in the SE and some okay weather for the rest of England and Wales. Bright rather than sunny but feeling milder, up to 15C, out of the breeze.

Halloween

Tuesday evening won't be as cold with temperatures in double figures, Much of the UK should be dry for any Trick or Treaters. There will be a SW breeze and outbreaks of rain over Scotland, heaviest in the west, drier to the east for the Guisers.

Outlook

We have our fine steady start today but there will be rain for the far north-west, particularly western Scotland of and on this week. The rest of western Britain will see more cloud and a little rain at times and County Londonderry and Co. Antrim will also be a bit damp. So not too bad for those who are finally on half-term holiday this week. Midweek will be a bit milder and then colder air returns from the north for next weekend.
