Temperatures this week in the UK are rather low with a cold north to northwesterly wind to start the week. At only 11 to 16C it will feel rather disappointing unless you find a sheltered sunny spot. This cool air will reach over Denmark, the Low Countries, into Germany and Poland, with temperatures dipping in Vienna, Prague and Budapest. There are warnings of late season frost with similar worries for growers across in Europe, as there are here.
The cold front over southern Britain on Monday afternoon will continue down through mainland Europe and there are weather warnings for thunderstorms, heavy downpours and high winds through central Europe and the Balkans.

There will be heavy frontal rain and mountain snow for Switzerland on Monday night and then severe convective weather for Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia’s RHMZ has red warnings for violent gusts with damaging hail and intense rainfall possible by Tuesday.

For northern Europe, the UK will be very showery on Wednesday and there will be unsettled weather for the Netherlands, Belgium and northwest Germany.
There are signs that by next weekend into early next week, there will be warm air over Iberia with rising temperatures for Spain and Portugal. A surge of heat northwards through central Asia could also topple into eastern Europe and the Baltic States but the northwest corner of Europe seems to struggle for a while.
The next Bank Holiday will be on Monday, 25th May, so we will have to see if the UK weather can sort itself out and warm up properly by then. There are strong signs that it won’t be as cold as this week, but an east or northeasterly flow still could catch out those by the North Sea. It’s a long way off for now.

Maritime activity around the Canary Islands has been in the news. There were concerns at the weekend about unsettled weather, but the evacuations and airlifts continue. High pressure will move from the north Atlantic towards the Azores later this week but that keeps the Canaries in a showery, breezy flow from the north.
The official Atlantic hurricane season starts in a few weeks, running from the 1st of June through til November. The National Hurricane Centre (NHC) has updated some of its charts for the coming season. There is no tropical activity at the moment.
The first Weather Holidays tour of 2026 is underway in the USA. This year, there is live streaming on Facebook. They have been in Texas and Oklahoma; seen incredible lightning, mammatus, dreadful visibility in a Haboob and supercells. The tour encountered roadside damage after the Brookhaven (Mississippi) tornado when a storm system moved across the region. Tornado damage injured at least 17 people locally.
As the risk of severe thunderstorms and damaging hail continues in the southeast of the US with warnings for Florida, there are critical fire conditions in the northern and central Plains with record heat expected in the West.

To the east of the Philippines, there has been a Tropical Storm ‘Caloy’, which has just recently weakened to an area of low pressure.
“CALOY weakened into a low pressure area at 8:00 PM today. The remnant low will move generally northward or northeastward over the Philippine Sea.” It is no longer progressing towards the Philippines and with “increasingly less favourable environmental conditions” it is likely to continue to weaken.
