Turning much milder, but often cloudy with occasional rain

After cold, damp and wintry weather this week, it will turn much milder from tomorrow, we could see the mid-teens Celsius over the weekend. But it will also be often cloudy, with some rain at times.

Issued: 19th February 2026 10:04

After a cold, grey and damp Thursday, with snow across parts of the north and west,  it will turn much milder on Friday, with temperatures reaching double figures. The mild southwesterly flow sourced from the sub-tropical Atlantic looks to continue through the weekend, we could see temperatures reach the mid-teens in SE England, though for most it will be rather cloudy, with a chance of some rain. Generally mild and changeable for much of next week too, though perhaps with a colder end to the week.

Turning milder from the southwest to end the week and very mild through the weekend for February

Today

It’s a cold, damp and, in places, wintry start to Thursday. Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow spread north across England and Wales overnight on the northern flank of Storm Pedro - which brought rain and gales to flood-hit western France. Snow has settled over higher ground of Wales, the Midlands and northern England overnight. There’s also been some patchy snow in places across Scotland and also a frost where skies have cleared in the north.

Rain, sleet and snow across England and Wales will gradually ease this morning, but it will remain rather grey for many across the UK, though some brighter skies could develop towards Wales and western areas of England. A few brighter breaks for Scotland this morning, before rain, sleet and hill snow moves in from the west across Scotland and Northern Ireland, as an area of low pressure approaches the far northwest. Not quite as cold as yesterday, temperatures reaching 5-8C generally, perhaps 10C across the far southwest.

Skies will clear in places from the west overnight for a time across England and Wales, so turning cold with a risk of localised frost, cloudier across Scotland and N. Ireland- with further rain and hill snow.

Friday

A dry start towards the east Friday, where we’ll see the lowest temperatures in the morning before a band of cloud and rain, with hill snow in Scotland, arriving in the west reaches the east early afternoon before clearing to sunny spells and blustery showers from the west. Winds strengthening while turning milder from the west too, temperatures widely reaching double figures, even in Scotland, highs of 10-12C.

Weekend

The weekend is looking rather mild - thanks to a long-fetch southwesterly flow drawing in Tropical maritime air from even further than the Azores way to the southwest. Temperatures widely reaching double figures on Saturday, perhaps as high as 15C in SE England and East Anglia. Similar values are possible on Sunday too, with mid-teens possible in eastern England.

It will be rather cloudy in general over the weekend in the moist but mild southwesterly flow, Saturday seeing some patchy drizzle in the morning, especially over southern and western hills and coasts, before rain becomes heavier and more persistent across the west in the afternoon, spreading to eastern areas in the evening. Sunday seeing thicker cloud and patchy rain slowly clearing the south, showers towards western coasts. Drier and brighter for central and eastern areas. Breezy weekend for all areas, especially towards the northwest.

Next week

The weather looks to remain changeable off the Atlantic and generally mild in a strong southwesterly flow until the end of the week, when it may turn colder across all parts, as winds turn westerly, bringing in colder polar maritime air. It will turn briefly cooler across Scotland on Monday, as winds turn westerly here, before milder air returns on Tuesday.

There will be spells of rain at times, heaviest and most persistent across the northwest, rain more patchy and lighter elsewhere until Thursday, when more persistent and perhaps heavier rain may affect the south too. Sunshine could be rather limited in the north and west, best chance of sunshine towards SE England and East Anglia during the first half of the week and here likely seeing the highest temperatures, perhaps reaching the mid-teens.

A spell of wet weather spreading east looks likely for all parts on Thursday, clearing to a colder and showery westerly or northwesterly flow from Friday, with sunny spells and scattered showers Friday and into the first half of next weekend, showers heaviest and most frequent in the west, wintry over higher ground too. Risk of widespread frost overnight under clearing skies.
