Sunny weather or rain showers for sporting events around Europe

A weekend with FA Cup finals, F1 in Imola, Italy and next week, French Open tennis and the UEFA Cup final as northern Spain sees more rain.

Issued: 15th May 2025 15:40

High pressure is securing dry weather this weekend for northwestern Europe including the UK. Spain and Portugal have seen mixed weather again this week with a weather warning for the southwest including the Costa Brava and Costa Almeria for heavy rain and thunderstorms on Thursday. Saturday looks settled and fine with warm sunshine and dry weather across Iberia. Temperatures in Portugal will be 24 to 30C well inland in the south and widely in the 20sC for mainland Spain. Rain will move slowly across the northern provinces of Spain later on Sunday, Monday reaching Madrid,  towards the Pyrenees on Tuesday but the north coast stays wet.  The Costas and Balearic Islands should see fine weather and warm sunshine over the weekend and start of next week. Seville will be dry this weekend with temperatures of 31 to 33C in the warm sunshine.

The Italian Grand Prix will be in September but this weekend is the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. 63 laps of the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, commonly known as Imola and former home of the San Marino GP with the Formula 1 race taking place on Sunday 18th. The weather does look dry with sunny spells for the practice and race days.

The low pressure over eastern Europe will drift northwards towards the Baltic States for the end of the weekend. It will also bring cloud and outbreaks of patchy rain to Stockholm before a brighter outlook with sunshine for next week. Stockholm should see temperatures rise to 18C by Tuesday before falling away midweek.

The low pressure which will bring wet weather to northern Spain will become more of a feature next week with heavy rain developing for southern France and across the Alps by Tuesday. This rain might be around for Wednesday 21st in Bilbao for the UEFA Men’s Europa League Final.  Heavy possibly thundery downpours will affect the central Mediterranean, more of northern Italy, and much of France by Wednesday with heavy showers for Switzerland and Austria.

The French Open begins next week and this unsettled weather might reach up to the Roland-Garros stadium in Paris. It's a shame as this weekend looks fine and sunny with temperatures around 22C. These rise by Tuesday to 25C and it will feel more humid but the shower risk also increases for the clay courts.

High pressure remains close to Scotland keeping the UK weather dry, often warm and sunny although there will be low cloud and a cool north wind along North Sea coasts. The weather looks sunny and warm in Wembley, London this weekend as both FA Cup finals take place.

The men’s FA Cup is the oldest national football competition in the world, starting in 1871/1872. This will kick off at 4:30pm on Saturday 17th and it will feel warm in the sunshine with temperatures reaching 21C. There will be a cooler northeasterly breeze but it will stay fine and dry for Crytal Palace and Manchester City.

On Sunday 18th, it is the Women’s FA CUP final between Chelsea and Manchester United. Again it will be a fine, sunny day, but with a bit more of a breeze from the north. However, it will feel warm in the sunshine with temperatures around 18C for the 1:30pm kickoff.

Around the other side of the high pressure keeping us dry but the east coast of Britain rather cool, warm air has surged northwards to Iceland where temperatures have reached 26C on Thursday 15th. Provisionally a new Iceland National record for the month of May.
