Next week is looking fine, dry and sunny but will also feel warmer. Finally, air from the south and temperatures will be rising into the twenties Celsius.
Yes, the UK weather will be warming up. We’ve seen fine, dry and sometimes sunny weather but not the temperatures to match. It has still been nippy overnight and by day it doesn’t take much to feel cool, even cold. The airflow will shift at the weekend and next week, we could see temperatures into the high twenties Celsius.
How warm will it get?
So far this year the top temperature was 24C on 14th April in Greater London. Next week we could see 22 to maybe 28C depending on the sunshine amounts, and the breeze. As we begin to draw in air from Europe, originating over North Africa, we will lose those chilly nights. It will feel different by day, no longer with an edge to the air. Time to adjust your wardrobe (briefly).
Glasgow and Inverness could reach 21C. Manchester up to 24 maybe 25C by midweek and York around 22 or 23C. Belfast and Cardiff should reach 21C on Wednesday but will feel even warmer. 23 to 25C for Winchester midweek but feeling more like 29C by Thursday. Norwich should reach 23C by midweek and Nottingham 24 or 25C.
London will be warm and sunny on Sunday with hardly any wind at 21C after a cool start for the Marathon. Each day becomes warmer next week, 23C up to 26 perhaps even 28C by Thursday and that will feel very warm on May Day.
Hotspots include London due to the size of the Capital, all the people and traffic and the concrete absorbing the warmth day on day. And yet this spring warmth isn’t just for the south of England. Northern Scotland will do well on Tuesday with temperatures around 19C for Inverness and the Moray coast in a southerly breeze. With a southeasterly breeze, Manchester and Merseyside will also warm up well on Tuesday.
For Wednesday, much of the UK will feel very warm. There could be a shift in the far northwest, as a weather front arrives from the Atlantic. Northwest and northern Scotland, perhaps northern counties of Northern Ireland might see a change later on Wednesday or even on Thursday if a westerly wind picks up. This far ahead there is uncertainty around that timing, it could stay warm in the far north for another day.
How long will it last?
All of next week does look warm with temperatures rising each day until Thursday. Unfortunately, just as we arrive at the early May bank holiday weekend, the airflow shifts again, with the ECM model showing a northerly. The weekend charts show cooler air off the North Sea, single-figure temperatures by night but there still could be warm sunny spells in places. It’s over a week away but at the moment, the Bank Holiday weekend might feel more like this week than the surge of warmth on its way for the end of April.
