Storm Darragh weakens over Europe as high pressure builds further north

Storm Darragh's influence across Britain continues to wane as a strong area of high pressure builds across Scotland and Northern Ireland. Stiff Easterly winds will continue to blow showers into eastern Britain though.

Issued: 8th December 2024 11:55

Although weakening now on the nearby continent, storm Darragh continues to pack a punch, with a yellow warning of strong winds and rain still valid across England and Wales until Sunday evening. As pressure rises strongly, the weather has already improved over Scotland and Northern Ireland, with all but the far South and South East becoming drier and quieter by mid-week.

Sunday afternoon sees further streets of showery rain mainly across the East and South in a strong, cold and blustery North wind that will continue to give gusts in excess of 50mph along some North Sea coasts. In the West, it will be brighter at times and not quite so windy, with sunny intervals and fewer showers. Meanwhile, apart from a few showers in the North and East, Scotland and Northern Ireland are dry in somewhat lighter breezes with sunny spells until dusk.

After dark, the East and South see further showers in a gusty and cold North to North East wind, while further North and West it's drier and quieter with clear spells. This will lead to a slight frost over Scotland, Northern Ireland and perhaps Cumbria, where temperatures fall to between -2 and +2C. Elsewhere there will be too much cloud at times and wind for this, where 4 to 7C will be nearer the mark.

Cold start for some on Monday

The new working week remains fine and dry across Scotland and Northern Ireland, with Cumbria and perhaps some other parts of North West England joining in. After an early frost and maybe a few mist and fog patches, light winds here coupled with some winter sunshine should lift temperatures to between 4 and 6C. But where any mist or patchy fog tends to linger, chiefly in the Forth/Clyde valley, it will be colder.

Across remaining parts of England and Wales on Monday, a cold and blustery wind continues to affect mainly eastern areas, the Midlands and South where it will still be mostly cloudy and showery. Further strong gusts are likely along exposed North Sea coasts and, as the wind turns more into a North Easterly quarter, Wales and the West may see more cloud than on Sunday. It will feel raw in the wind, particularly across eastern counties, with top temperatures 6 to 8C, maybe 9C towards the South West.

High pressure over Scotland

After dark, and with a large anticyclone now across Scotland and Northern Ireland, these areas together with much of northern England and probably Wales remain dry and fine. Clear spells and light winds allow another slight frost with a few mist and fog patches forming later, as temperatures fall to between -3 and +2C.

The East and South should also see some improvement as winds decrease a little, but a North East wind will still be quite gusty towards exposed coasts. This will continue to bring a few showers, but with more wind and cloud here while feeling quite raw, you should escape a frost.

Hello all.

So as the title suggests, I was wondering if anyone might have some insite on severe thunderstorm events in Ireland? As someone native to Ireland it is my understanding that widespread convective storms are relatively rare events here...
