Mixed weather bag this weekend and into next week

A mixed bag of weather is on the way during the coming days, although it'll often be dry in the south and east.

Issued: 30th July 2022 11:05

Today has got off to a cloudy start for most of the country, with some rain in parts of north Wales, the Midlands and northern England. There are some sunny breaks locally in northern and eastern Scotland, north-east England and the far south of England. A theme of unsettled weather, often with a fair amount of cloud, but not much rain for the south and east, will continue over much of the UK during this coming week. Brighter, fresher weather looks like establishing towards next weekend.

Today

A weak frontal system will continue to bring cloudy skies and some outbreaks of mainly light rain over northern England and much of Wales, but the rain over the Midlands will tend to fizzle out. Some sunny spells are forecast to come through in southern parts of England, and also in Scotland, particularly the south and east of Scotland. A few showers will develop in the north-west of Scotland. Northern Ireland will be generally dry and cloudy, but with potential for a little light rain or drizzle, especially in the south.

Temperatures will be on the cool side for much of the UK, failing to reach 20C over much of Northern Ireland, the majority of Scotland, northern England and Wales. However, temperatures will reach 21 to 23C in sheltered eastern coastal parts of Scotland and north-east England, and in the Midlands and south of England. Parts of East Anglia and the south-east will reach around 27C.

Tonight, the weak frontal system will start to move slowly southwards, bringing rain southwards into the Midlands and also Norfolk, and it will be generally cloudy over England and Wales. This will result in a warm night with temperatures generally falling to a minimum of between 15 and 18C, and locally no lower than 20C in central London. In Northern Ireland, minimum temperatures of 12 to 14C will be typical. Most of Scotland will have somewhat clearer skies and a colder air mass which will result in temperatures falling to between 8 and 11C.

Sunday

Sunday will be another cloudy day over most of England and Wales, with the band of rain slowly moving south but tending to fizzle as it moves south, so southern England will generally see very little or no rain from it. However, isolated thundery showers are expected to break out over East Anglia and the south-east as the front moves in. Brighter, cooler, fresher weather will move slowly southwards through the north of England, and some brighter intervals will also come through elsewhere in England and Wales. Temperatures will reach 24 to 26C in the south-east of England, and 20 to 22C in north-east England and the Midlands, but in other areas will generally reach 17 to 20C. Scotland and Northern Ireland will have sunny spells, and some scattered showers mainly in the north of Scotland.

Next week

Another warm, sticky night with plenty of cloud is expected on Sunday night into Monday over most of England and Wales, but it will again be cooler and clearer in Scotland and Northern Ireland. During Monday, the relatively warm and humid weather will push into all parts of the country from the south-west, after a bright and chilly start for most parts of Scotland and northern England. Outbreaks of rain will spread from the south-west, some of which will be heavy in west Wales, Northern Ireland and western Scotland, but again rainfall amounts in many eastern and southern parts of Britain will be small. By evening it will be generally cloudy everywhere, though staying dry in north-east Scotland and most southern and eastern parts of England.

There will be further rain for northern and western Britain on Tuesday, but it will tend to become light and patchy, and it will remain warm and humid towards the south-east, with some sunny spells coming through in the south and east of England. On both Monday and Tuesday, temperatures will reach around 27C in the south-east.

Wednesday looks set to be rather hot and humid for south-east England and East Anglia with some places hitting 30C, but cooler, brighter, showery weather will spread from the north-west to most other parts of the UK. The cooler fresher weather will extend to all parts on Thursday and Friday, with high pressure building from the west and bringing mainly dry sunny weather.
