Week Ahead Weather: Fine in the north at first but otherwise changeable

After a fine start in the north, the changeable, often unsettled weather further south will eventually spread to all parts during the week ahead.

Fine weather over Scotland and Northern Ireland gives way mid-week to unsettled conditions from the South West. Outbreaks of rain, which will be heavy and thundery over England and Wales, clear to the East to leave a brief lull, then breezier with occasional rain or showers. Perhaps warmer towards the South East next weekend.

Sunday

Mostly fine and warm over Scotland and Northern Ireland with some sunshine once low cloud in the North and East has cleared. Top temperatures 13 to 16C in North East, 18 to 21C in the West. Thundery rain across some central and northern parts of England at first, but drier towards the Scottish borders. Some bright spells further South but scattered showers, some heavy giving thunder and gusty winds. Maximum temperatures 15 to 18C but 20 or 21C in the sunnier spots.

Sunday night

Further rain or showers over England and Wales heavy in places, especially across central parts. Some thunder at first, mainly in the South, drier towards Cumbria. Mostly fine over Scotland and Northern Ireland, but a few showers in the South. Clear spells, especially in the North and West. Patchy mist and fog by morning, some cloud in East. Lowest temperatures mainly in the range of 9 to 13C.

Monday

Showers mainly in the East and across central and southern parts of  England and Wales, some still locally heavy, with perhaps thunder in the South. Becoming brighter and mainly dry West of the Pennines. Finer across Northern Ireland and much of Scotland again with some sunshine. Cloudier and cooler over parts of East Scotland, with a few showers. Top temperatures 12 to 14C in North and East, 15 to18C in South and West.

Monday night

Showers begin to clear but still some, mostly in the South and East and towards North Sea coasts of Scotland. Drier elsewhere with clear intervals, especially over Northern Ireland and western Scotland, but variable amounts of cloud. Some mist and patchy fog forming later, where skies stay clear overnight. Lowest temperatures mostly between 8 and 12C.

Tuesday

A lull brings a fair to fine day for most, although with variable amounts of cloud. Some sunshine but with the odd shower 'bubbling-up' through the day, in generally light winds. Remaining mostly dry and fine over Scotland and in the East into the evening and night. Freshening winds bringing rain move into Northern Ireland, Wales, the West and parts of the South before morning. Maximum temperatures 14 to 21C. Minimum values 8 to 12C.

Wednesday

Scotland, particularly the North, could remain fine and dry with sunny spells for much of the day, but most parts see some rain followed by scattered showers across Northern Ireland, southern and central regions in breezier conditions. After dark, the rain spreads to northern Scotland, with clear intervals and a few showers elsewhere. Maximum temperatures 13 to 20C. Minimum temperatures 9 to 13C.

Thursday and Friday

Atlantic systems bring further occasional rain or showers to most parts, heaviest in the North and West. It'll also be quite windy with some strong or gale-force gusts across Northern Ireland, the far West, and the North and West of Scotland at times. Brighter or clearer intervals between, though. Temperatures well up to normal, 14 to 16C in the North and West and 17 to 21C in the East and South depending on brightness. Mild nights with the thermometer generally falling no lower than 11 to 15C.

Next Weekend

Still mostly Atlantic driven with occasional rain or showers, but probably somewhat drier and brighter towards East Anglia and the South East, where some warm sunny intervals are possible on occasions. Still quite breezy especially in the Noth and West but with temperatures well up to normal, say 15 to 19C generally but somewhat above towards the South East, where 21 to 23C is possible. Further mild nights, say 11 to 16C.
