Early Easter Holidays see a shift from mild air to cold winds and frosts

Mixed fortunes if you are off this week for Easter hols. It's started off mild but is turning colder with more snow for northern Scotland. Quite a chill to end the week, with brisk winds.

Some schools are already on their Easter holidays whereas others are waiting for this weekend before their two week break. This week has started off mild and blustery for most of the UK but with significant snowfall for the far north of Scotland. That cold air is going to reach right down through the UK over the next few days. By the weekend, temperatures won’t be as high anywhere and there will be a chilly wind from the north. The regular Netweather weekend forecast is out on Wednesday with a week ahead forecast on Sundays. Here we will look at Wednesday to Friday 8th here in the UK.

UK temperatures of 16C on Monday were some of Europe’s highest temperatures. Greece and Turkey did manage into the high teens, whereas Spain has been cold. The Algarve, round to Gibraltar and Malaga have all seen wet and windy weather with large waves along the coast. The Alps saw a very unsettled at the weekend but with cold air and decent snowfall, conditions are now good with clearer skies.  The sector of warm air has remained over the UK for Tuesday but moves away over Germany and Poland in a brisk westerly wind midweek. So, temperatures will fall. If you are out and about for the second half of this week, it’s back to coats and even hats and gloves in the brisk wind.

Cold air down through UK

Thursday sees the UK in cold Arctic air. If you are making plans and looking at a weather app, there will be the air temperature and maybe sunshine showing but you need to know what it will feel like. Adding on the wind and the damp air. The far north of Scotland will see more snow. Bands of rain, sleet and hill snow will work their way down through Northern Ireland and northern Britain on Thursday. They fade somewhat over the Midlands but could still bring some icy bits to East Anglia by the afternoon.

UK weather Easter holidays

So, a shift for the showers. On Wednesday coming in from the west for Wales, Cornwall and Devon as rain, also for NW England and the Peak District on a brisk wind. Then through Thursday a north to NW wind with drier conditions for SW Britain.  The showers will always be well scattered as a low centre slips across Scotland but still, it will be cold in the wind, you might say bitter.

The north wind brings more wintry showers down over Scotland on Friday, into NE Scotland and a scattering over Northern Ireland. Further south there could be some fine weather with sunshine, drier and not as windy. Still only 11C though. There will be a band of rain lurking through the English Channel or over the north coast of France later this week and it might wave up to the south coast of England or just set off showers. Something to watch.

camping weather

If you are considering camping, then do be aware that widespread frosts will return. It will be cold; the air is still cold and there will be clear skies as the north wind continues into Saturday.

Caravans, cottages or campsites may have been booked a while ago. There is still Covid uncertainty to battle with and as always, the UK weather. It can be warm and lovely in April. March was one of the sunniest on record and temperatures passed 20C. The rest of this week looks cold although signs it should be a bit warmer by Good Friday.
