Week ahead: mostly dry again, glancing arctic northerly mid-week brings colder air

High pressure will be close by or over the UK in the week ahead, so for most it will be dry and settled. Glancing blow of cold arctic air from the north mid-week will bring colder air Wednesday and Thursday.

High pressure looks to remain generally in control of our weather through the coming week, so for many it will remain mostly dry and settled with sunny days along with frost and fog at night. However, there will be fronts arriving by mid-week bringing a little rain to the north followed by a switch to a northerly flow across all parts on Wednesday and Thursday behind a weakening cold front sweeping south on Wednesday, bringing a glancing blow of cold arctic air across all parts. But with high pressure close by to the west, any wintry showers the northerly brings will be confined to the far north and eastern coasts.

High pressure will be close by in the week ahead, but will centre to the west mid-week, allowing a cold northerly arctic flow to develop on Wednesday:

Today

For now, a weakening cold front moving south across England and Wales this morning will bring a little patchy rain to northern England, Wales and the Midlands this morning. A lot of mist, fog and low cloud across southern England and East Anglia ahead of the front this morning, some bright spells here and there but there are also showers across the far southwest which will clear through the morning.

Mostly dry and sunny conditions across Scotland and N. Ireland today, which will reach northern England, north Wales and the Midlands later this morning and through the afternoon as the cold front clears south. Generally cloudy but mostly dry across southern England and East Anglia this afternoon as the weak front arrives. Temperatures reaching around average today after a chilly start, 7-8C generally, 10C across the southwest.

Tonight

High pressure builds back in across the UK tonight after briefly retreating today, so clear skies across most areas, away from northern Scotland, which will be cloudy with a few showers, will mean temperatures will fall close to freezing, with a widespread frost developing. Some patchy mist or fog developing too.

Monday

Most places will have a dry and fine day on Monday, with plenty of sunshine, early mist and fog patches across central and southern areas should clear by mid-morning. Cloudier across the far north of Scotland. Temperatures reaching 8-9C.

Tuesday

Tuesday will see a cloudier day across the northern half of Britain, with fronts moving in off the Atlantic bringing outbreaks of rain across N. Ireland and Scotland. High pressure hanging across southern Britain will mean Wales, central, southern and eastern England will have another dry day with sunny spells developing after a cold start with frost and dense fog in places. Temperatures reaching 5-8C across central and eastern areas, 8-11C across the north and west.

Fog and frost risk in the south Tuesday morning

Wednesday

A weakening cold front sweeps south on Wednesday, bringing cloud and a little patchy light rain or drizzle to the south in the morning before clearing to sunnier but colder conditions already in the north across most areas through the afternoon. Increasingly wintry showers moving in across northern Scotland through the morning then extending south along eastern coasts through the afternoon.

Thursday

A widespread frost Wednesday night leading into a chilly day on Thursday in the northerly wind, dry and sunny for most, but eastern coasts may see some wintry showers. Perhaps more in the way of cloud with some showers across northern Scotland.

Friday

Mostly dry and settled on Friday, with high pressure in control. And you might of well guessed already that it looks to remain dry and settled next weekend too.
