Cool & showery theme to continue for the foreseeable as low pressure sticks close by

Showers or longer spells of rain to end the week and through the weekend. Some sunny spells too, but staying on the cool side, with temperatures generally remaining below average. Staying unsettled next week too.

The weather will have an unsettled theme for the rest of the week, through the weekend and even into next week, thanks to low pressure close by. So, expect showers in many areas or even longer spells of rain in the south at times. There are no signs of any real summery warmth either, temperatures generally staying slightly below average for the time of year, though it will feel pleasantly warm in any sunshine, with sun strong now just over a month away from the summer solstice.

Today

For now, it’s been a dull and quite a wet start for the morning commute or school run across Wales and SW England- where persistent rain that moved in overnight from the south continues this morning, so there’ll be some surface water and spray on roads here. Also, showery rain affecting parts the Midlands and southern England further east. Drier and brighter or sunny further north across the north coast of Wales, much of northern England and across to Lincolnshire and Norfolk. Northern Ireland and western Scotland dry and bright or sunny too, but eastern Scotland grey with low cloud and haar.

Staying rather cloudy across SW England and Wales, with further outbreaks of rain, perhaps persistent at times across SW England, though the rain will tend to break up and turn more showery across Wales this afternoon. Showers at times and some sunny spells developing after a cloudy start further east across the Midlands, SE England and East Anglia, heavy locally. Sunny spells and showers developing after a dry start further north across northern England, N. Ireland and western Scotland, showers locally heavy with thunder. Staying grey and cool across eastern Scotland. Temperatures this afternoon reaching 13-16C, pegged back to 10C in the northeast – where we keep low cloud and haar.

Tonight

Showers will ease and eventually die out for most areas tonight, away from coasts and SE England – where they will linger, while the front bringing the rain in the southwest pulls away. So, becoming largely dry, it will become mostly cloudy across eastern areas, as cloud rolls in off the North Sea on the easterly breeze, clearer skies in the west.

Friday

The UK will be between two weather systems on Friday, one to the east over Scandinavia and eastern Europe, while a new low pressure system over the Atlantic approaches the west. So overall it will be drier day with light winds, staying rather cloudy across eastern areas but remaining mostly dry, clearer skies with some sunshine in the west and southern most counties of England, but this will trigger some slow-moving heavy showers in places. Chilly in the northeast with brisk northeasterly wind developing here. Temperatures reaching 12-16C generally, but in the northeast 10-11C at best.

Weekend

Then as we head into the weekend, the unsettled theme continues. A frontal system will move in off the Atlantic across England and Wales on Saturday, with a spell of rain moving east and northeast during the morning, lingering across northern England, but followed by sunshine and heavy showers with thunder locally elsewhere into the afternoon. Scotland and N. Ireland seeing sunny spells and a few showers.

Sunday will see sunshine and heavy showers developing with low pressure moving in close to the southwest, showers with hail and thunder locally, particularly across England, Wales and N. Ireland. Drier with sunny spells and fewer showers across Scotland, showers mostly in the south.

Next week

Staying unsettled next week, Monday and Tuesday likely seeing sunny spells and further heavy thundery showers breaking out during the day, particularly across northern and eastern areas. With winds from the west or northwest, it will be on the cool side too. Showery theme perhaps continuing for the rest of the week, perhaps longer spells of rain too.
