A brief chillier blip today but no sign of any proper winter cold for now

Despite colder weather today, there's still no sign of winter as the (so far) very mild season continues.

Despite colder weather today, there's still no sign of winter as the (so far) very mild season continues. And, if the latest computer model runs are to be believed, it looks like much of the same at least until the middle of January, with the North wet and windy at times while the East and South are often drier and brighter.

Overnight rain still affecting parts of East Anglia and the South East, will clear through the morning, although towards Kent it may remain rather cloudy until into the afternoon. You'll then join the remainder of the country on a bright day with sunny spells. It'll also be mainly dry, but with a few showers in the West and North, that'll be wintry on Scottish hills.

A Westerly wind will be fresh and blustery in the North and West, with gales in the far North where gusts to 60mph are likely across Shetland at first. This'll make it feel rather cold with temperatures mostly between 6 and 8C, but it'll be mild towards the South East at first where temperatures will fall a little through the day.

After dark, the remaining showers in the North and West may fade for a time, leaving most places dry. There'll be clear spells, with a West or South Westerly wind decreasing a little. The North and East of Scotland together with East Wales and rural part of the East and South, see temperatures falling close to freezing giving a frost. Over Northern Ireland, western Scotland and Cumbria you'll avoid this, with probably an increase in cloud across many western parts by morning.

A touch of frost in places tonight

With pressure high particularly in the South, Saturday for most will be a dry, quite pleasant day. There'll be sunny spells, particularly in the East and South at first, but with variable amounts of cloud. This'll be thick enough to give some rain over the North and West of Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland, with Cumbria also perhaps seeing a little rain. Over Northern Ireland though it may turn brighter, with sheltered parts of Down and Armagh possibly seeing a little sunshine later. Top temperatures 6 to 10C, in a mostly light or moderate West or South- Westerly breeze.

Skies may break at times in the East, but much of Scotland and Northern Ireland are cloudy after dark. The North and West continue to see patchy rain, while the East and South of England see skies breaking at times to give clear intervals. Here a touch of grass frost is possible again in sheltered rural areas, but for most, it'll be a relatively mild night, with lowest temperatures 7 to 9C in the North and West and 2 to 6C further South. A moderate or fresh South Westerly wind will be lighter in the South.
