Following the exceptional heat last week, this week will be a lot cooler, fresher and with rain for many over the next few days, in the form of some heavy thundery downpours. The weekend saw sunshine and warmth for some, but for parts of northern and eastern England it has rained nonstop for much of it, Rochdale receiving 91 mm, close to 4 inches of rain, with flooding affecting parts of Greater Manchester. The large rainfall totals over the weekend across parts of northwest England are still having knock-on effects this morning for commuters, bringing delays.

It will dry up across the north of England this morning to join the rest of England and Wales to a fine day, showery day for Scotland. Showers will move into the southwest though and this heralding an area of low pressure that will move slowly across central parts over the coming few days, bringing cooler, breezy and showery conditions for the rest of the week.

Today

It’s still raining across the far northwest of England, however, the slow-moving weather front that brought the relentless rain to parts of the north and east over the weekend will drift north across Scotland and weaken, bringing showers and sunny spells rather than persistent rain.

After a cloudy start for northern England this morning, with some showery rain in the northwest, the rain will gradually clear north and the cloud will clear too this morning to leave a drier and sunnier afternoon. Indeed, much of England and Wales will have a dry, fine and sunny day, with prolonged sunny spells across central and eastern England. It will become cloudier and windier towards the southwest as a fairly deep area of low pressure arrives to the southwest over the Atlantic, with showers, locally heavy, spreading in across SW England and eventually south Wales. Temperatures today reaching 19-22C in the north, 22-26C in the south.

Tonight

Windy towards the southwest tonight, with heavy thundery downpours spreading north across SW England, Wales and also further north across NW England and east across central southern England and the Midlands by the end of the night. Elsewhere, showers fading across Scotland, with most areas becoming dry with clear spells.

Tuesday

An area of low pressure will move in across western areas on Tuesday morning, bringing a wet and windy start across western areas of England and Wales, heavy outbreaks of rain, with a few thunderstorms mixed in, will become more widespread across much of Britain through the morning and into the afternoon, though there  will be occasional sunny spells and the far east of England and northeast of Scotland may stay dry and sunny. Winds will gust to 45-50mph over hills and around coasts, especially across western, central and southern areas, so worth bearing in mind doing outdoor activities. Temperatures down on today’s values, because of the wind and showers, reaching 19-21C in the west, 21-24C in the east.

Rest of the week

Into Wednesday, that area of low pressure will continue to slowly drift eastwards across central areas then eventually out into the North Sea, so another day of showers becoming widespread , locally heavy with hail and thunder, it will be breezy too, SW England, south and west Wales, Northern Ireland and the northeast of Scotland may escape with a mostly dry and sunny day though. Temperatures reaching 18-22C generally.

A shallow area of low pressure still close by over the North Sea on Thursday will mean further showers developing during the day, perhaps heavy and thundery locally, for northern, central and eastern areas. SW England, Wales and N. Ireland likely staying dry and sunny.

Still a few showers likely to develop across central and eastern areas on Friday, but perhaps not as heavy as previous days, with more places staying dry and sunny, while feeling warmer too.
