Dare I say it - Spring-Like - mild and increasingly sunny end to the week

The mild weather continues with winds continuing to blow up from the south during the remainder of the week. Even the wetter northwest will sunny, mild act for a time after today.

Some days it's a job to know where to start with the daily weather update, it can either be because there's so much going on or, as in the case of today, because there's so little going on. We're stuck in a mild, but mostly quiet flow right now, with just the far north and northwest seeing some rain and stronger winds.

The average maximum temperature in February is approx 7c in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, 5.5c in Scotland. So with highs into double figures, and even getting into the teens today and during the remainder of the week, it's certainly unseasonably mild right now. All thanks to a southwest or southerly flow.

For the time being, there's a fair amount of murk and cloud around especially in the north and west, with some fog patches early and late in central and eastern parts. After today though, the air will start to dry out a little from the south, so Thursday and Friday will bring increasing amounts of sunshine once any early fog clears. Although by later Friday weather fronts will be nearing the northwest, bringing more cloud and some rain, along with (eventually) some cooler air again.

Today, it's the northwest and far north of the country seeing some wet weather as well, with murky, showery, drizzly bits of rain continuing to plague western hills in particular through the rest of the day. It'll be an improving picture tomorrow though as the winds tilt round further towards the south, pulling drier continental air in with them.

Talking of the winds, they'll also be strong in the far northwest with gales affecting the western Isles and exposed northwest fringes of Scotland. They'll ease early Thursday but it'll be a brief respite before they pick up again later in the day, ahead of Friday's inbound weather front.

Windy in the northwest

With clearer skies in southern and central parts tonight, there'll be some patchy frost forming. Once again, there will also be some fog around, which could be locally dense for a time tomorrow morning. Thursday then brings a mostly dry day, with any rain starting to ease back in the north. Highs of 12-14c are likely countrywide.

Another chilly night, with frost and fog in places, follows. Then for most, Friday is set to be the pick of the days this week, with lots of sunshine and the mildest temperatures so far - maybe reaching 15c or so in some spots, making for a (whisper it) Spring-like day!

Spring-like temperatures on Friday

All the while though, rain will be on the march into the northwest, along with some increasingly strong winds for parts of Scotland. And that less settled, cooler weather looks set to slowly spread to other parts during the weekend and through into next week.
