UK Weather: Warm Day In The South Before Turning Cooler, Most Places Staying Settled

Issued: 27th September 2018 09:38

England, Wales and eastern Scotland enjoyed spells of warm sunshine yesterday, the temperature reaching 23.6C in Lincolnshire. Much of southern Britain will again enjoy some summer-like sunshine today, with temperatures perhaps reaching 24C (75F) in the east. However, a cold front, currently bringing heavy rain to northern Scotland, will slip south today and overnight, weakening as it does so, but introducing much cooler and fresher air from the north across all areas by Friday morning. Some places in the south may see a drop of 10 degrees Celsius or more in maximum temperatures compared to today’s highs. High pressure will build in from the west across the south to start the weekend, so central and southern areas will stay mostly dry and bright throughout the weekend, windier and changeable across the north. A cool northwesterly flow for all on Sunday - as high pressure retreats back west. Cold nights too over the weekend, with some patchy frost in places.

Colder air sweeping south across all parts by Friday, then high pressure builds in across the south to start the weekend

Today

For now, it’s been another night of temperature contrast across the UK, with another chilly start across southern counties of England – where temperatures at dawn were as low as 1C at Exeter Airport, while in the north Carlisle and Boulmer in northern England were 17C!

After the chilly start in the south, any early fog patches or low cloud should soon clear to a dry and sunny morning across much of England and Wales, blue skies across the south, so it should quickly warm up as the sun get to work. Further north, it’s also a sunny but rather mild start across eastern Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Across northern Scotland we have thicker cloud and outbreaks of rain accompanied by a strong to gale force southwesterly wind, the rain spreading south across Scotland and N. Ireland through the morning and into the afternoon, turning showery as it does so, followed by cooler conditions, sunny spells and a few showers in the northwest – afternoon highs reaching 11-15C. The cloudier skies with showery rain reaching northern England late afternoon and into the evening, highs here reaching 15-17C. However, to the south, the rest of England and much of Wales will enjoy a fine afternoon with plenty of warm sunshine, temperatures reaching 21-24C.

Tonight

Then overnight, a band of cloud and a little drizzle along that weakening cold front will continue to move south across England and Wales towards the south coast by the end of the night. Mild ahead of the front across the south, dry with clear spells and turning chilly to the north of the front.

Friday

Dry, bright and chilly start for most on Friday morning, perhaps with a touch of frost across the north this time. High pressure will build in from the west through the day, ensuring most areas will stay dry and fine with lengthy sunny spells, once early cloud across the south clears. Thicker cloud with the odd spot of drizzle in the far northwest of Scotland. A noticeably cooler day, especially in the south, temperatures ranging from 12-14C in the north to 14-17C in the south.

Weekend

High pressure will hold on across the south on Saturday, so much of England and Wales will be dry with sunny spells after a chilly start. Windier and becoming cloudier across Scotland and Northern Ireland, as weather fronts move down from the northwest, bringing outbreaks of showery rain southeast.

A strengthening northwesterly wind will spread down across all areas on Sunday, strongest winds in the north – where it will be changeable with sunny spells and showers. The south mostly dry with occasional sunny spells, but clouding up a times perhaps enough to bring the odd light shower. On the cool side, with temperatures ranging from 11-13C in the north to 14-17C in the south.
