Sunshine & Thundery Showers, Hill Snow For Scotland

Issued: 4th April 2018 08:39

Tuesday saw a large contrast in temperatures north and south of the Scottish Border, with a maximum temperature of 4C in Edinburgh with snow over Scottish hills while in Hull in East Yorkshire it reached 16C in some sunshine. It won’t be quite as mild today across England and Wales, with some thundery showers around and Scotland will remain cold with some hill snow.

The good news is that high pressure will build in tomorrow, bringing a dry and bright day with sunny spells for most. High pressure will hang on across the east keeping it dry on Friday, rain arriving in the west. But with southerly winds – it will be warmer, particularly in the east, where we could see temperatures reach 16C on Friday.

Today

For now, outbreaks of rain are affecting much of northern England, Northern Ireland and southern Scotland, with sleet and hill snow across central and northern Scotland. The sleet and hill snow will continue for much of the day across central and northern Scotland, though easing in the afternoon, snow could bring some problems over higher routes in the Highlands. A band of rain will clear north from northern England into southern Scotland.

Following the rain clearing northern England and Northern Ireland this morning, heavy showers already gathering across SW England and south Wales will become more widespread across England, Wales and Northern Ireland through the day, after a dry and sunny start across central and eastern England, some of the showers will be accompanied by hail and thunder. Showers will be slow-moving across central and western areas, close to an area of low pressure moving northeast – so a risk of localised flooding. Sunny spells between the showers though.

Temperatures reaching 4-7C across Scotland and Northern Ireland, 10-13C across England and Wales. Winds light across central areas, as low pressure moves across, a brisk north or northeasterly wind across Scotland and the far west, a brisk southerly wind across eastern England.

Tonight

Rain, sleet and hill snow across the north today will then move southeast across northern and eastern England overnight, perhaps bringing a covering of snow over the Cumbrian Fells and Pennines, with some sleet or wet snow possible over hills further south. Drier and clearer conditions following across northern, central and western areas as the rain clears out into the North Sea, with a frost developing, temperatures perhaps dipping as low as -5C in some spots.

Thursday

Any overnight cloud and rain across SE England and East Anglia clearing first thing, otherwise a dry and bright but cold and frosty start for many, with temperatures close to or below freezing in rural areas, bringing a risk of ice on wet surfaces. Most places staying dry with sunny spells throughout the day, a few showers possible across western Scotland though. Temperatures reaching 7-10C in the north and west, 10-12C in the south and east of England.

Friday

Another area of low pressure moving in from the Atlantic on Friday across the far west, bringing outbreaks of rain across Ireland and Northern Ireland initially, before arriving across western Scotland, Wales and far southwest of England after a dry morning. Turning cloudier across eastern Scotland, NW England and the Midlands after a sunny start, but eastern England staying bright or sunny. With southerly winds, temperatures could reach 15-16C in any sunshine across the southeast, 9-13C more likely further north and west.

Weekend

Weather front slowly moving east on Saturday, bringing cloudier skies and outbreaks of rain from west to east through the day, the rain perhaps pepping up towards the southeast for a time. Drier and perhaps brighter conditions following across the north and west. Mild everywhere, perhaps reaching the mid-teens towards the southeast.

Cloud and rain perhaps lingering across SE England and East Anglia on Sunday, brighter but with scattered showers elsewhere across England, Wales and N. Ireland. Scotland may be mostly dry and sunny, with just a few showers in the north.
