Rain Edging South, Small But Feisty Low Pressure Zipping Through Tonight

A wet day in parts of the north today, and with a small low pressure system moving through later, strong winds will be a feature in places this evening and overnight.

Parts of Northern Ireland, Southern Scotland and f Northern England have started wet and will stay that way for much of today. After pepping up a fair bit during the second half of the day, the rain will very slowly edge south later this evening and overnight. With the rain, we'll see some increasingly strong winds later today and overnight, as a small but quite feisty low pressure system zips through.

Feisty low pressure tonight

It'll be areas to the south of the low which see the stronger winds this evening and overnight, with 50-65mph gusts in exposed locations. This initially across Ireland then into Wales and a good swathe of England.

Wind overnight tonight
The rain will be heaviest in western regions, giving quite a soaking with 50mm plus over the higher ground. Gradually it will run out of steam as it moves further south, clearing from southern England during the first part of tomorrow. Away from the wetter, windier areas today, western Scotland will see some showers but further east will see some good sunny spells. The same can be said for southern and central England, but cloud will fill in from the north during the day.

Into tomorrow, it's a very different picture with loads of sunshine, and just a few showers affecting the west of Scotland and perhaps one or two elsewhere. After a chilly start, it'll be a fresh, cool feeling day with a noticeable northwest wind blowing. The thermometer will show 10-15c typically, but with exposure to the wind, it'll be feeling as if temperatures are in single figures for a good deal of the country. Which means I can show you the first wind chill chart of the season!

Wind chill Thursday

A cold night follows, with some ground frost to start the day on Friday. For a good deal of the UK, a similar day to Thursday will follow, with lighter winds too, so feeling a bit less chill. But in the east, the wind will take a while to ease down. And in the west, southwest winds will be increasing through the day bringing with them more cloud and some outbreaks of rain into Ireland and Scotland later.

The rain will filter southeast overnight and during Saturday, with a more settled Sunday likely to follow.
