September 2017 UK extremes

A round up of the max and min temps, rainfall amounts and highest gusts for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

September 2017 saw a top temperature of 24C in Clwyd on the 4th, a balmy night on the 5th when Essex only dipped to 17C. A nip in the air by the 22nd in highland Scotland with -1.2C for Sutherland.

(The highest ever recorded Sept temperature was 35.6C in 1906 in South Yorkshire (2nd), but there are some reservations by the Met Office about this value. It was very warm as Moray recorded 32.2C on the first in the same year.)

Storm Aileen ( the first named storm of this season) bought 64mm of rain to Moray and a top gust of 83mph to exposed site at the Needles Lighthouse on the 12th. Cornwall had the sunniest September day on the 1st with 12.5C. We have now passed the Equilux and the nights are drawing in.

October has already seen a min of -1.8c, gusts over 60mph at low levels and a gust for Cairngorm summit of 98mph on the 2nd.

Usual for October to be more lively on the winds and rain front. Storm Brian is the next name for an Atlantic low pressure with significant impacts for the UK, we will await developments in the coming weeks. Maybe even the first dusting of snow for the Scottish mountains.
