Showery This Weekend, Drier Early Next Week

An area of low pressure moving east across southern Britain will bring showers for many across this weekend, but also some sunny spells between the showers, though there will be fewer showers across northern Scotland. As the weekend low clears east and high pressure builds in from the west early next week, it will turn drier and sunnier from the west on Monday with Tuesday mostly fine, though the odd shower can’t be ruled out. Then it looks like all change from mid-week, as low pressure returns, bringing a spell of rain for all on Wednesday, followed by sunshine and showers for the rest of the week.

Today

For now, cloud and outbreaks of rain along a cold front are affecting southern Scotland, northern and parts of eastern England to start Saturday, drier and brighter over northern Scotland, while south and west of the rain band it’s a brighter start, but already a rash of thundery showers are affecting southern counties of England and Wales.

Through the rest of the morning and afternoon, the rain across southern Scotland and northern England will turn more showery, showers locally heavy and thundery here. Further south, it may start dry and sunny, but the shower clouds will bubble up inland too, with much of England and Wales likely to see showers, locally heavy with hail and thunder, perhaps most frequent across southern counties. Northern Scotland escaping with a mostly dry and bright day.

Temperatures today nothing to shout about for high summer, reaching 16-19C generally, 20-21C across SE England and East Anglia, but feeling pleasant enough in the sun thanks to lighter winds than yesterday.

Tonight

Showers continuing across northern, central and eastern England for a time overnight, turning drier with clear spells towards SW England and Wales. Some showers continuing across southern and eastern Scotland too, though northern and western Scotland along with N. Ireland staying mostly dry with clear spells.

Sunday

Sunday will start mostly dry, bright or sunny across much of England and Wales, however, showers will re-develop as the sun warms up an unstable atmosphere, showers locally heavy with hail and thunder. Cloud and rain will affect eastern Scotland and NE England for much of the day, while N. Ireland, northern and western Scotland enjoy a mostly dry and bright or sunny day. Perhaps a tad warmer on Sunday, temperatures reaching 17-21C generally, London and southeast England maybe reaching 23C. Winds mostly light in the south, though breezy across the north.

Monday & Tuesday

The low over the weekend moves on east by the start of the new week, which will allow a ridge of high pressure to build in from the west. There will probably be some cloud and light rain on Monday morning across eastern Scotland and NE England, but for many it will be a mostly dry, bright or sunny day.  Tuesday will be mostly dry and fine with sunny spells too, though cloud will bubble up in the afternoons on both days to bring some well-scattered showers, but you’ll be unlucky to catch one, most places staying dry. Warming up too early next week, Scotland, N. Ireland and northern England seeing highs of 19-21C, Wales, Midlands, southern and eastern England seeing highs of 21-25C.

Rest of the week

The weather looks like going downhill on Wednesday, as a low pressure system arrives to the northwest, with a frontal system ahead of this low bringing a band of heavy rain and gusty winds eastwards to western areas initially, before the band of wind and rain pushes east to reach eastern England by Wednesday night. Rain clearing the east first thing on Thursday to sunshine and blustery showers both Thursday and Friday, most of the showers in the northwest, where they may be heavy and thundery, central, southern and eastern areas perhaps staying mostly dry and bright or sunny. It will be breezy everywhere, windy in the northwest – where it will be coolest.
