The Olympic games in Rio start tomorrow (for us, Friday in Brazil). Rio is only 4 hours behind London so not too many issues with staying up late to catch the final of the 100m although the Opening ceremony is being aired at 1am on Saturday morning. The opening ceremony will last for 4 hours so you may be advised to watch the highlights after a good sleep instead. If you want to follow on twitter its @Rio2016_en (for the English version). Chris Hoy has just carried the Olympic Flame and Andy Murray will carry the flag for @TeamGB. Use #GBR to get the Union Jack emoji.
Brazil will host the Games of the XXXI Olympiad this month, with the action centred in Rio de Janeiro, clustered around four zones – Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracanã. Also five football co-host cities: Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Manaus, Salvador and São Paulo.
On Thursday, Rio temperatures ranged from 17C overnight to 24C by day with humidity between 60 and 85%. Sao Paulo’s humidity fluctuated between 45 and 95% and the temperatures in Amazonian Manaus peaked at 34C. It is winter in the southern hemisphere.
National Met service for Brazil http://www.inmet.gov.br/ , my Portuguese isn’t up to much but you can see the satellite for GOES 13, chose region sudeste. It is forecast to get warmer in Rio this weekend, up to 33C which could be ideal for the beach volleyball?

The Rowing takes place at Lagoa Stadium, set on a lake in the heart of the city, with Christ the Redeemer looking down on the competitors. The nearby mountains and ocean will add to the excitement with potentially strong winds blowing over the natural body of water for the sailing and canoeing events as well
Also outdoors will be the marathon, race walk, cycling events and triathlon. There is the Golf at the purpose-built Olympic golf course. Also, the temporary Deodoro Stadium, built around an existing polo field, will host the rugby competition, as well as the equestrian and combined running and shooting sections of the modern pentathlon.
For the Football, there is the Amazonian Arena in Manaus which you may remember from the World Cup in 2014 where Italy beat England 2-1 in the “not ideal” jungle climate. Well inland in the north of Brazil.
Corinthians Arena in São Paulo, Brazil’s largest city. West of Rio along the coast
The Fonte Nova Arena is in Salvador (Nazare) Further north along the Atlantic coast
The Mané Garrincha Stadium, in Brasilia, the capital. Well inland NW of Rio
Back in Rio, the legendary Maracanã Stadium will hold the opening and closing ceremonies and the men's and women's finals and a semi-final
Another World Cup venue, the Mineirão, north of Rio, inland (Belo Horizonte Pampulha Carlos Drummond).
Good luck to TeamGB, I’m looking forward to the next few weeks of awesome world sport and eventing.
