Edinburgh Festivals - Firework finale Monday night

The Edinburgh festivals 2015 is now drawing to an end. This year's weather hasn't been too bad, could have been warmer this last week. One evening left for the finale Fireworks at Prince's Street Gardens

Virgin Money Fireworks Concert

It's Bank holiday down south and there is going to be a lot of heavy rain for England and Wales on Monday. Edinburgh escapes this by day but will have a cool Monday with a light breeze off the Forth and a lot of cloud. During the day, it should be dry and grey, however there are some annoying showers showing up on the forecast charts for around 10pm. The chart below for 21Z (10pm) shows a cluster of heavy showers moving southwards across the Forth straight for Edinburgh. With 24 hours still to go, there still could be some variation in the timing of exact path, but there is the threat of showers. Hopefully they will be 20 mins too late as the show is approx. 45 minutes long and starting at 9:30pm. Then you just might get damp on the way home.

The winds are light so there are no logistical problems with blustery weather, but that does mean the showers won't clear away very quickly if they do arrive at the wrong moment. It will be a cool evening, so take a blanket for you knees if you have a deckchair for the gardens. Photo fireworks - Grant Ritchie

Friday 28th

Lots of key outdoor events this week in Edinburgh as the festival draws to a close. The Military Tattoo continues until Saturday night, the Mela festival is at the weekend, the finale Fireworks take place next Monday night and this week there are three Magner's Summer Nights concerts coming to Edinburgh midweek as part of the festival.

Wednesday early rain will clear northwards, leaving a fine, sunny afternoon. Another band of rain will appear late evening after a blustery day, still feeling cool in the air.
Thursday  will be a bit grey and even damp at times in the morning. It improves in the aftenroon with bright even sunny spells. Still blustery and feeling cool 15C and a fair evening.

Fine "Summer Nights"

Doors open at 6pm, Wednesday James from 9:30pm  Fine start, rain likely by end, blustery and cool 12C.
Thursday The Flaming Lips from 8:45 - fine, blustery and cool 13C
Friday 28th August, the Waterboys. A night of big music in The Gardens, spanning the freewheeling rock'n'roll and southern soul of their magnificent new album, Modern Blues, to classics and other gems from their remarkable, shape-shifting 30 years. Another fine evening, not as cool at 15C but still with a brisk wind.

Military Tattoo

After nearly a month we are now nearing the end of the Edinburgh Festivals. The weather over Midlothian has generally been kind and at times even warm. The Edinburgh Tattoo continues this week with the final performance on Saturday night featuring an extended firework display. I spoke to @Edfests about the Military Tattoo, the upcoming Mela and the fireworks.

"If there's one Edinburgh festival where organisers and attendees are especially conscious of the weather, it has to be the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. The huge military spectacular features hundreds of well drilled performers and hosts thousands of fans - around 220,000 over the course of August (not to mention the 100 million or so watching on TV around the world!) Taking place in front of specially erected stands on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, the location is almost as dramatic as the show itself.

Because of this open air position of course, overhead conditions are always relevant - although no performance of the Tattoo has ever been cancelled due to bad weather or anything else. Happily, this August has been largely excellent in the evenings so far - although the last week will see the odd shower and feel cooler in blustery winds. Whatever happens though, it's a wonderful experience and even if it does rain a bit, you're sure to have a fantastic time!"

Mela

"Edinburgh's August festivals are drawing to a close - although there's still one that hasn't even started yet, in the shape of Edinburgh Mela". Bollywood dancers are already appearing in the Tattoo this year from the headline Mela show. Scotland's biggest festival of world music, dance, family fun, fashion and food at the lovely green spaces at Leith Links 29th - 30th August. At the minute  Saturday should see some sunshine with more cloud Sunday but staying dry. Update Thursday.

Further ahead and Fireworks

The next forecast update willl be here on Thursday, so we'll have the weather for the Mela and a look ahead to the Fireworks finale on Monday 31st evening in Princes Street Gardens. "Bringing the month to a spectacular close is Edinburgh International Festival's Virgin Money Fireworks Concert - the largest annual fireworks concert in the world. High above the iconic Edinburgh Castle, the fireworks will boom, all the while perfectly choreographed to the live music played below by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra."
