The UK will experience a notably mild but changeable week, with winds generally from a southwesterly direction, but on Wednesday briefly backing southerly drawing warm air up from the Mediterranean, potentially allowing temperatures to reach 16-17°C in southern and eastern areas, which would be the warmest of 2026 so far.
Unseasonably warm air spreading up from the south by mid-week
There is also potential for some very windy weather later in the week, with a few weather models forecasting a deepening low to cross Ireland and Scotland on Thursday, bringing gales to the north and west. Most rainfall will be across the north and west, drier towards the south and east until Thursday, with the best chance of seeing some sunshine here.
Potential for gales in the north and west later in the week

Most of the rain this coming week falling in the north and west, particularly NW Scotland

Yesterday saw a high of 16C at Yeovilton in Somerset, well-above average. Again, today, we could see temperatures approach the mid-teens across England and Wales, 12-14C widely, perhaps a few spots 15C. Early rain across southern England will clear southeastwards, leaving a mix of sunny spells and showers, though most of the showers across northern and western areas, the east of England staying mostly dry. It will remain breezy though.
A mild but breezy night tonight, further showers across northern and western areas, frequent towards western coasts. Gales developing across western Scotland. Dry with clear spells across eastern areas.
A bright or sunny start across eastern areas, showers across the north and west. Showers will continue across Scotland before easing late afternoon, meanwhile, cloud will thicken from the west across England, Wales and N. Ireland, with patchy rain spreading in from the west, reaching SW Scotland later in the day. Another mild day, temperatures reaching 10-13C.
Remaining unsettled and breezy in the far northwest - with further rain for western Scotland and N. Ireland. Thicker cloud with some patchy drizzle for light rain for NW England and Wales too. Dry and bright or sunny for central, southern and eastern England. It will be very mild, with temperatures reaching 12–15°C widely across England and Wales, highest in the east. 10-11C for Scotland and N. Ireland.
Likely the warmest day of the week for many, as winds back to come from a southerly direction. Southern and eastern England could see highs of 16–17°C under bright or sunny spells. However, most of Scotland, N. Ireland and perhaps Cumbria will be cloudy and wet, but mild.

More unsettled for all on Thursday, with a brisk southwesterly wind bringing cloudy skies and scattered showers. Still mild, though not as mild as Wednesday.
Possibly wet and windy for all later in the week, gales in the north and west
Perhaps turning wet and windy from the west Thursday night, some models show a deepening low moving over Ireland and northern UK, other models don’t. But likely windy and, in places, wet start to Friday nonetheless, with gales in the north and west, giving way to sunshine and blustery showers.
Next weekend continues unsettled and windy, but likely mild. Most rain towards the north and west though.
