Chilly tonight but clear skies for Aurora spotting

Another chance for spotting the Aurora this week and skies will be clear for much of the UK on Thursday night. It will be cold though and frosty

Air temperatures early on Thursday morning fell below freezing for inland parts of Scotland, and down to zero at Belfast. It will feel chilly for most of the UK during Thursday night and on Friday morning with more inland, rural spots dipping well down into single figures.

With high pressure building, there will be more fine weather, sunshine by day but clear skies at night. There were showers on Thursday driven into northern Scotland on the N/NW breeze and down the east coast of Britain.

There has already been a bit of snow over the very tops of the Cairngorms and a few flurries passing by. This cold flow from the Arctic continues as high pressure builds in over Wales and England from the Atlantic.

Once more, there is a chance of seeing the Aurora, a frustrating business for those who can’t stay up all night long. And unlike other recent viewing opportunities, it is going to be cold tonight. Another coronal mass ejection is Earth-bound from the sun. There have been some incredible shows in the past week with plenty of solar activity. It's just been the timings that have teased.

There will be a good deal of clear skies during Thursday night but in the far north, showers continue to feed in over Scotland. Southeastern Scotland will be more likely to see more clear spells whereas the northwest will be peppered by more showers and cloud cover. The rest of the UK should see good clear spells.

“Oct 9 A fast CME erupted from the Sun the evening of 8 Oct and is likely to arrive at Earth on 10 Oct. This CME has been analysed and there is potential to reach G4 levels upon arrival and throughout CME passage.”

There will be a frosty start on Friday with bright autumn sunshine. For Scotland, there will be a scattering of showers. Most of these will be of rain but again with sleet and mountain snow. A band of heavier showers and rain will slide in from western Scotland late morning and across the NW Highlands during the afternoon. The band of wet weather will set in for Orkney and the far north of mainland Scotland. Later it will reach Shelatnad on Friday night with sleet and even snow. Iceland saw its first proper snowfall of the winter on Thursday and it is this air that will tuck down to the far north of Scotland.

As a low pressure develops over NE Scotland there will be more cloud, a westerly breeze and further showery outbreaks of rain. These will edge southwards early on Saturday morning across Northern Ireland and the Central Belt of Scotland into northern England. Behind, the wind will veer to a brisk cold northerly and there will be more showers and snow for the Scottish mountains.

Let's hope you are right !

I'm holding you responsible if EC is rubbish now !!🤭

northwestsnow I think we’re reaching a point of model convergence now. ECM should hopefully follow suite

I'm aged 54 and over those years snow in November here in the relatively balmy west country has been pretty rare.

The models are showing there's a distinct chance of some of the white stuff arriving early this year. A cracking run up to winter proper...

Good Morning. Glittering frost noticed atop the fence panels when out feeding the birds, felt chilly too. (5.45am) temp 2°C , Good fresh clear air for once, could see clearly across town. Gloves needed methinks for my walk to work.
