Mostly dry until the weekend, west is best for sunshine

High pressure over Scandinavia will keep most dry rest of this week, best of the sunshine in the west and the south tomorrow too. Low pressure moving in to the SW over the weekend will spread rain or showers across England and Wales.

Issued: 7th March 2024 09:59

High pressure over Scandinavia extending west towards the British Isles will mean most places will remain dry until the weekend, though there could be a few showers breaking out across central and southern parts today and northeastern areas on Friday. An easterly flow will bring low cloud, mist and fog to eastern areas which may be slow to clear, though becoming confined to the northeast through Friday. Best of the sunshine towards the west. The easterly wind strengthening through Friday, taking the edge of temperatures which will be around average for early March.

Scandinavian high will bring a mostly dry end to the week, but low pressure moving into the Bay of Biscay will strengthen easterly wind and bring showers or longer spells of rain north across England and Wales this weekend

A deepening area of low pressure moving east across the Bay of Biscay this weekend will keep a strong easterly wind blowing but will also spread cloud and showers north across southern areas of England and Wales on Saturday, drier and brighter further north, though showers in the northeast. Showery rain edging further north on Sunday, only the far northwest staying dry and sunny by then.

Today

For now, eastern areas of Britain are starting of grey with low cloud, mist and fog. A bright start across western areas, the far north and far south. A chilly start for most though, still frosty across northern Scotland and a touch of frost earlier elsewhere in the west. It could stay rather grey across some eastern areas of England and Scotland, with the odd spot of drizzle, sunnier elsewhere, but a few showers may break out across southern England, the Midlands and east Wales. Otherwise most areas dry. Temperatures reaching 10-12C, but a cooler 8-9C along eastern coasts.

The easterly wind will strengthen tonight, pushing low cloud, mist and fog off the North Sea across eastern England, the Midlands, northern England and Scotland. Cloud thick enough to produce some showers across NE England and eastern Scotland. Dry with clear spells elsewhere. Chance of a grass frost in sheltered parts in the west, otherwise generally frost-free.

Friday

A strong easterly wind across many areas on Friday, taking the edge of temperatures, but more in the way of sunshine across much of England and Wales, northern England northwards seeing more in the way of cloud with a few showers, though far west of Scotland and N. Ireland sunny and dry. Temperatures reaching 10-11C in the sunshine across England and Wales, 7-9C under the cloud in the north and along North Sea coasts exposed to the wind.

Weekend

We keep the strong easterly wind going through the weekend. Low pressure moving in across the Bay of Biscay will push weather fronts north across southern Britain on Saturday, bringing cloudier skies and showers north across Wales, Midlands, southern England and East Anglia. Drier and sunnier further north, though cloudier across NE England and eastern Scotland – with some showers. Temperatures reaching 9-13C across England, Wales and N. Ireland, 7-9C across Scotland, lowest temperatures along North Sea coasts.

Wet at times across England, Wales and N. Ireland on Sunday, as outbreaks of rain spread northwest. Cloudy with showers across eastern Scotland, best place will be western Scotland – which looks to stay dry and sunny. Temperatures ranging from 8C in Edinburgh to 12C in London.

Next week

More persistent rain should pull away Sunday night, but remaining showery across England and Wales on Monday, showers continuing for eastern Scotland too, western Scotland staying dry and sunny. Isobars will tend to widen Tuesday onwards, as high pressure builds, so winds becoming lighter and turning drier and sunnier by mid-week. Some uncertainty on timing, but rain could return from the west from Thursday, with more unsettled conditions taking over from the Atlantic towards the end of the week.
