Mixed weekend of brighter spells and showers, with further snow in the North

The weekend brings quieter weather after Thursday's heavy rain and snow. Expect lingering snow in Northern Scotland, showers elsewhere, and milder temperatures the further south you are.

Issued: 9th February 2024 10:17

After the drama of heavy rain and snow on Thursday, the weekend will have a quieter feel about it, although there'll still be the threat of snow for the northern half of Scotland. Low pressure will be with us throughout, though, so there'll be showers around and a fair bit of cloud.

Saturday will see the rain, sleet and snow slowly easing off in Northern Scotland, and by this point, the snow will typically be limited to 200m plus. There is a Met Office warning issued for the snow and ice risk between now and Saturday afternoon, as there may be some disruption on the roads and slippery surfaces out and about, which is something to consider if you have any plans.

Elsewhere Saturday, there'll be some patchy rain across southern and central Scotland, which will also fizzle out as the day wears on. For England and Wales, there'll be a good amount of dry weather to be had, with brighter, sunnier spells more likely in central, inland regions. There will be some showers about, these chiefly in the west, but more isolated ones are liable to run from the south through into southern and central regions as well.

Temperature-wise, there'll be something of a north-south divide, with Scotland (particularly the northern half) staying on the cold side at 1-4c, whereas there'll be milder air further south with maxes of 10-12c in southern and central parts.

After some patchy frost and icy patches from northern England northwards overnight, Sunday will dawn with a fair amount of cloud. There'll be showers from the off as well - these mostly in southern, central and western regions to start, but they're likely to spread east through the day. Not all will catch one, but they may be heavy as and when you do. Temperatures won't be too far from normal for the time of the year, so 3-6c across the northern half of the UK and 6-10c further south.

Briefly looking ahead into next week, Monday may well start on the chilly side with some patches of frost where skies clear. Then, it's another day of sunshine and showers - the showers starting in the west but transferring east during the day. Tuesday could then see a more persistent spell of rain moving into southern regions. Although there is some uncertainty over how far north this may get, it may even miss entirely.
