Staying mostly dry & settled, warmer and sunnier in the west

High pressure will remain in control close to the north or northwest this week, through the weekend and well into next week. So most staying dry and settled, some places cloudy at times though, generally warmer and sunnier in the west.

High pressure is going to be in control of our weather for the rest of the week, through the weekend and likely well into next week too, so generally it will remain dry and settled. However, because the high will be centred offshore close to northern Scotland through the week and, by the weekend, to the northwest of Scotland, winds will feed in from the north or northeast across England and Wales, bringing cloudier skies at times, making it feel cooler. With lighter winds towards the northwest, here will see the highest temperatures for the rest of the week, reaching the mid-20s Celsius over the next few days, elsewhere reaching low twenties Celsius at best – which is around average highs for August. But cooler where it remains cloudy and along North Sea coasts with the onshore breeze.

Today

Some places are starting the day with plenty of sunshine, but some are starting dull and murky too. An area of cloud has blown in off the North Sea overnight on the northeasterly breeze across Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, The Midlands and Wales – bringing a grey start here. Cloud thick enough to bring some patchy drizzle towards the North Sea coast. Elsewhere, bright or sunny though with some cloud floating around in places.

Morning cloud should thin and break with most places seeing sunny spells for the rest of the day, though some central and eastern areas of England and the far north of Scotland may hang on to cloudier skies. Sunniest in the west and northwest, cooler towards eastern coasts with an onshore breeze. Highest temperatures likely to be across western Scotland – where we could 25-26C. Elsewhere, temperatures reaching 20-23C.

Cloud rolling back in from the North Sea on the northeasterly breeze tonight across eastern, central and southern areas of England and perhaps across to Wales and the far north of Scotland, with the odd spot of drizzle. Elsewhere, dry with clear spells.

Wednesday

Low cloud to start across parts of England, Wales and the far north of Scotland, this thinning and breaking to leave sunny spells across most areas, best of the sunshine across the far south and northwest, but a brisk northeasterly breeze along southern coasts of England. Highest temperatures again across western Scotland – where pressure will be highest, reaching 24C. Eslewhere – 19-21C.

Thursday

High pressure centred close to northern Scotland on Thursday, but a subtle change brought by a weak cold front moving west from the North Sea and brisk northerly wind down the North Sea coast will bring thicker cloud with some drizzle or light rain across the eastern side of England and eastern coasts of Scotland for much of the day. After perhaps a cloudy start in places, brightening up across western areas, with sunny spells for much of the day.

Friday

Cool, cloudy and breezy with some drizzle in places across eastern England, turning sunnier across Wales, northern and western parts of England after perhaps a cloudy start. Scotland and N. Ireland dry with plenty of sunshine and light winds, highest temperatures again across western Scotland.

High pressure still in control over the Bank Holiday Weekend

Bank Holiday Weekend

High pressure still in control over the Bank Holiday Weekend, centred close to the northwest of Britain – this will bring a northeasterly wind across southern, central and eastern England which will feed in cloudy skies at times here, with some showers across SE England possible on Saturday. Cloudy skies also feeding in across Scotland and NE England at times, particularly on Sunday. Sunniest across N. Ireland, western Scotland, Wales and western areas of England - so here will see the highest temperatures.
