There have been gusts of 50 to 70mph overnight for Wales and southern England. The low pressure that brought rain in from the west yesterday, is right over the UK this morning. So more windy and wet weather to come today. Then the low clears off over the North Sea overnight. Better for Saturday, another band of rain from the west on Sunday and then looking more settled for next week.

Yesterday the top temperature in the UK was only 15.3C There will be some chilly nights coming up with a touch of frost in the north. By day the air remains cool which is noticeable in the shade and after dark. In the strong sunshine, it will feel pleasantly warm, and temperatures edge up to 17 or 18C by the middle of next week.

Where is the May warmth? It has been very warm in northern Russia where temperatures are above 30C. May records are being broken in this surge of very warm air from the south. Japan also had its hottest May day on Friday with 33.6C. Meanwhile, Europe stays in the cooler air.

“Windy weather may lead to some travel disruption and, perhaps, damage to temporary outdoor structures.” Met Office

The Met Office wind warning continues focusing along the Bristol Channel this morning, southern England through the day and East Anglia later. A cold brisk northerly wind sets in for northern parts of the UK with further strong gusts.

Today

Overall, it will be another cool, unsettled day with blustery winds and spells of rain. Southern Britain will experience fresh to strong SW winds with gales for exposed coasts and gusts over 55mph. Kent and East Sussex look particularly windy by lunchtime.

Around the low pressure bands of rain are being driven in. More for Wales and SW England. You can see the rain shadow from the Welsh mountains with more rain over the Midlands. It should stay drier for the windy counties of southern England. Northeast Britain also sees plenty of rain with grey damp conditions. Bands of rain coming in from the northeast but little rain for western Scotland and some shelter for Northern Ireland. The wind from the north will bring in heavy showers this morning. Over northern England, the winds will be lighter, in the centre of the low, and here heavy showers will develop with the risk of hail and thunder by the afternoon.

This afternoon the brisk SW winds continue over SE Britain as the northerly winds affect west coast Scotland down to the Isle of Man and gusts of 60mph. And a strong northerly over the Grampians and down the North Sea to East Lothian. Surfs up for Friday afternoon. Temperatures today will widely be 10 to 13C but colder for Scotland and Northern Ireland in the north wind.

It stays windy in the SE this evening with strong SW winds through the eastern Channel. The cold, gusty north wind will hit the coasts of NE Britain this evening if you have plans to sit outside the pub.

The heavy showers fade overnight as the low pressure eases off over the North Sea. Skies clear and it turns cold for NW UK but there will be a sunny start for Saturday here. The east coast of Britain will still be blustery and everywhere will feel colder with the flow from the north. Pressure will be rising but there will still be a scattering of showers in the brighter west, lingering cloud for eastern England and temperatures of 10 to 15C.

Saturday becomes more steady, with fewer showers, more sunshine and light winds. Cool by day and a touch of frost inland for Scotland and NE England. By Sunday a new low will be heading in from the Atlantic and this will throw cloud and then rain over Northern Ireland in the morning. A southerly wind picks up but the rain takes its time to reach eastern Britain, perhaps not until the evening.
