Super Saturday and a fair weekend. Settled, mostly dry and a bit of sunshine

High pressure will bring plenty of steady weather this weekend with light winds but still sometimes a chill. Six Nations action on Saturday, fine weather if you are escaping for a walk.

Issued: 19th March 2021 17:40

The slow-moving steady weather continues this weekend with high pressure nearby. It’s an ongoing story of pesky cloud making it gloomy grey and feel quite cold or blue skies and spring sunshine. At times the cloud will be thick enough to bring a little patchy drizzle but it shouldn't put off anyone not wanting to watch the rugby from heading out in the afternoon.

Looking at the radar and satellite image from Friday you can see an old frontal band of cloud across Britain NE to SW. There are clearer skies over SE Britain with some chilly air and also clear skies to the NW with some good sunshine over western Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland. Edinburgh reached the dizzy heights of 19C on Thursday with the help of Foehn Effect winds from the NW over the mountains. The fading frontal band edges down to southern England during Saturday morning as a new cold front appears for the far north of Scotland. That sinks southwards over Scotland later bringing more cloud and overnight into Sunday morning it topples over Northern Ireland, northern England into north Wales with grey skies and dampness and just slowly pivots over the UK north-south.

Cold air over the SE of England, particularly Kent will retreat away during Saturday although by day along the north coast will feel chilly in the morning. So, temperatures across the UK range from 8C to 17C. Scotland and NE England do well for sunshine. There will be a light north to NW breeze drawn in some low cloud to western coasts and a brisk west wind for the far north of Scotland as the cold front arrives.

Super Saturday rugby weather

Nippy overnight but mostly staying above zero and then light north winds on Sunday again with a good deal of cloud, some brighter spells and overall a coolness as temperatures tend to stay around 10 to 13C. For most, it is a fair, quiet day with bright spells at times but still the need for a coat. Maybe even gloves and a hat. However again sunny spells for parts of Scotland, NW England and north Wales.

For Super Saturday, the three Six Nations rugby matches look like having fair, calm weather.

Sunny and fine at Murrayfield for Scotland v.  Italy with a light westerly wind by 14:15

Dublin will be bright and dry up to 12C in the afternoon but be cooling off by 16:45 at the Aviva Stadium as Ireland play England.

And for France v. Wales in Paris, it will be fine and dry by Saturday evening but in the cold air that is over SE Britain at the moment. So, a chill in the air and a light north wind.

The cloud nor sunshine isn’t to be relied upon this weekend. It comes and goes but makes a huge difference. Light winds for most and overall dry, ideal if you are wanting to head out for a walk to avoid all that sport and no interruptions to play if you are planning to get very comfortable.
